I received a letter stating I was one of the winners in the "Compensation Draw" in conjunction with the Sweepstakes Association of North America.
I won $250,000 and was sent a check for $4,540.00 to pay the taxes with.I was given the name Celin Goodman as Tax Agent but was told to call the claims agents first.

I called and spoke with Mary Richards. She said I won the grand prize and it would be sent to me as soon as I paid the taxes. She said I had to deposit the check and call her back.

When I asked her why I couldn't cash the check and purchase the money gram as stated in the letter she said I HAD TO DEPOSIT the check. When I said that didn't make sence she hung up on me.

I believe this is a scam to get access to my checking account. The check was issued from Ensign United States Drilling, Inc. out of Denver,CO and drawn on Wells Fargo Bank.

#4 Consumer Suggestion

Don't deposit that check

AUTHOR: Dave - (Canada)

POSTED: Tuesday, September 16, 2008

They don't want your bank account information. They've already stolen the bank account information from Ensign United States Drilling.

They want you to deposit the bad check, and withdraw YOUR money. Once you send money via Western Union / Moneygram, your money is gone. The check will be returned unfunded, leaving a hole in your bank account.

Note: There's no such thing as a Sweepstakes Association of North America. The different laws between the US and Canada would prevent such a thing.
If there were such a thing, they would have a 1-800 number, not a cell phone.
If it were a "North American" association, how could they describe you as a non-resident?

I'm glad you got hung up on the semantics over "cashing" versus "depositing". That saved you from being a victim.
