I want to file a complaint against Assurance Van Lines located at 1451 W Cypress Creek Road, Ft. Lauderdale, FL  33309.  In preparation for an impending move, I contacted them and was asked to walk each room in my home and describe the contents in detail to the agent on the phone.  Upon completing what was asked of me, I was quoted $6,200 in writing to complete my move and ultimately charged a $1,200 deposit to lock in this quote.  However, when this company showed up at my home, they doubled their quote to $12,000.  At that time, I refused the service because I felt it was ridiculously unfair that Assurance doubled their quote and expected me to pay it.  I then contacted my bank and disputed the $1,200 deposit, explaining that Assurance Van Lines failed to provide service in accordance with the binding written estimate.

The behavior of Assurance Van Lines caused me to seek out an alternate moving company, which pushed my move date back by four days.  My house sold and as such, I expected that all the contents would be moved in accordance with the binding written estimate provided by Assurance Van Lines.  Assurance left me in the precarious position of rearranging everything related to my move.  I believe their actions were unprofessional and extremely unreasonable.  I could understand if there was a $1,000 discrepancy; however, to have the binding estimate doubled was unconscionable.  I do not understand how a company can remain operational when they treat their customers like they treated me. Under no circumstances would I ever recommend Assurance Van Lines to anyone planning a move.

They are NOT movers. They are moving brokers

AUTHOR: FloridaNative - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, June 13, 2017

I noticed right away that the office address you gave is for one of those month to month executive suite buildings which is a red flag. A moving company (that actually has trucks and equipment) doesn't have an executive suite. I visited their website and noticed they "forgot" to put the actual suite number in their address, they just put the street address of the building. This is another red flag.  The fact that they gave you a "binding estimate" with your description of your property over the phone is another red flag.

You can't get a real binding estimate without having a representative from a legitimate mover come to your place and provide a written contract after completing the walk through of your home to itemize the items to be moved. This is critical to know. One other item:  a moving broker has no control over the final moving costs. It is a rip off right from the beginning because a moving broker can only control their own fees & costs and not the fees and costs of a third party.

The final nail in the coffin are these statements from their website (paraphrased):

  1. They aren't movers - they only coordinate moving between you and the mover
  2. Actual charges will be based on what the carrier charges. This is the carrier that they choose, not you.
  3. They actually state that once you sign an agreement with this moving broker you agree that they have performed all of their services the instant you sign it. That statement is enough to never do business with these people.

Not all moving brokers are ripoff's. But there are a bunch of them that are....you are far better off to go with a local mover that your friends and/or family have used in the past with success. These moving brokers that quote on line or on the phone are almost always guaranteed to be ripoff companies because they haven't seen your stuff and can't issue a binding quote for a third party (the actual mover is the third party). Deal direct. Make sure they have their own equipment and trucks. Don't use a moving broker.  Get your quotes in person from the moving company representative and in writing and read the contract before you engage the mover. Make sure the contract you sign is with the same company that is doing the actual move - I have seen unscrupulous people use a folder from one company and slip a contract in from another company.  Be careful. This particular industry (moving industry) is filled with people that claim to be movers that aren't licensed or insured or even movers.
