I signed my daughter up at the Portage, IN ATA in March 2007 on a 6 month
contract at $99 per month. In August or September 2007, Mr. Garcia also of the Portage, Indiana ATA asked if I wanted to sign her up for a more advanced class. (Sidenote: I immediately felt like it was a sales pitch and a scam and shouldve followed my first mind and walked out.) I inquired as to the time of the classes, and was told that he could not find a schedule at that time, but he believed that the classes would be around the same time as the class that she was already in. I signed her up, but when I arrived home to see that the times of the classes conflicted with my work schedule, I called Mr. Garcia immediately (around noon) and left a message stating that I would not be able to make those class times and requested that he NOT fax over the new contract, which he said he would not be doing until later that evening. I called back that following Monday to make sure that he had received my message, but again, never got a call back. For the next 3-4 months, the fees ($125/month now) were withdrawn from my bank account, which let me know that my calls to Mr. Garcia and the Portage ATA were ignored. I then called Mr. Johnson, also of Portage ATA, multiple times and those messages to resolve this issue also were ignored, however, the withdrawals mysteriously stopped, but the next month I began receiving bills requesting payment. I continued to try to get some resolution and/or explanations on my account through their collection agency, SCS, until June 2008 when I was told that my account had been inactivated. All communication from them ceased at after that e-mail. On 5/9/2011, almost 3 years later, I received an irate phone call at work stating that they were prepared to sue me for the balance due!
I will be also be reporting them to the BBB.

Thank you for responding...The ATA is a franchise and the name of my school is Portage ATA Martial Arts..the previous owner was Portage Black Belt Academy and Karate for Kids. I am independently owned and operated. i purchased the company in April of 2009 after the previous owner could no longer operate the studio, and was stripped of his instructor certificate. I am aware of the problems he caused, and have struggled to move past them...he tarnished the reputation of the ATA in the area. The Valpo school was also sold last year, and the new owners have had the same struggles there as well. The person you are angry with is no longer involved int he ATA, and debt owed to him by his former students has nothing to do with the school as of today. He is the one you are mad at not me....I have lowered the prices, and changed the length of the memberships to avoid these types of problems. The lawsuit you are claiming to have filed needs to be aginst him personally and not the Portage ATA we are no longer connected and you wont get anywhere suing me..I am sure you have the schols phone number and information...if you would like to get his personal contact info I will provide it to you if you would like to contact me. Mr Johnson is also no longer involved int he school and owns a non ata studio in portage. I would be happy to speak to you about all of this and help you get a better understanding if you are still confused...however when you google the name of the studio this is what comes up....not exactly helping my business is it? I will ask you to please remove it form the interent as the site is asking me for $2000.oo to take it down. This is gross interferance with a business and a false claim...if you would like to re-file it against the former owner and list the name of school as it was in 2007 be my guest but Portage ATA Martial Arts, and Portage Black Belt Academy are two seperate and different business's and you have slandered the good name of someone who has done nothing to you and has never met you. I understand your anger, and you have every right to be mad...but please direct it at the appropriate people.

Mam,
In reply to your rebuttal, please know that I am also a single mom, and my "rampage" and "lies" as you called them only have to do with the facts as I know them and lived them. I was not notified that the company was sold to you, nor is it my business to find that out - especially when the very unprofessional and irate collections agency "representing ATA Portage" called with the threats and accusations. I've also received notification in the mail noting Portage ATA as their client (I'd be glad to send you a copy if you would like to file a lawsuit against the previous owners), so if it is the previous owners that I'm to be upset with, the company name remains the same, and I apologize that you're now associated with that name and all that comes with it.
And thank you for the advise as I have already contacted an attorney to assist me in this matter.

I do not appreciate you slandering this business as I purchased it in April 2009, and have never done any of the thinhgs you are accusing. You are upset with the previous owners who own the collections accounts not me. Next time you go on a rampage maybe you should get your facts straight. I am a single mom and I run this business on the up and up I have no ties to the previous owners. I now have a bunch of rip off reports online about my school, and these complaints are going to be harmful to me. Thank you I appreciate your integrity. Maybe you should get in contact with an attorney and sue the people who you are actually upset with instead of slandering my good name when I had nothing to do with it. I would appreciate it if you removed these slanderous lies
