Ok well my son left on a mission trip July 15, 2005 for San Pedro Belize. He forgot his cell phone was in his side pocket, so he had ended up taking it with him there. Later that week he called me via,"internet phone" and told me he was settled in and that he accendintly brought his cell but he put it away at the place. Not to mention he had know accesories and the phone was dead.

So during that week he left the Island, for the main land. He was going for sevral weeks helping out with the youth.

During that time the phone was "stolen" or at least thats what the phone recordes show. Later that month we recevied are bill like normal except the bill was over $$19,000$$ in charges. I was so angry that there wasn't any call or responce to what was going on in my account.

There should have been a red flag notice showing the iregular charges compared to are normal once a month charge. I mean they let it climb from are normal once a month payment of $120 for are three shared phone plan to..$19,000 A**H****

After we found out, we got ahold of my son and faxed him copies of the call's that were made. He got the police involved and they caught the people who were involved in this. By this time he was leaving for home in like a week, and the police told him that they needed to send off the report for something and in a day or two he can come get it back.

So after all this I called and told them to cancle my service... HA what a joke, months later I get a new bill for like $21,181.90

So when I called them back to explain agin what happen they said call here an here an here, and that went on for hours till I got ahold of (DAVE)(1-877-859-3296). He was the most rude hurtful employee ever! who said things like well if you were a "Christian" then you should be paying your bills, refering to the fact that my son went on a mission trip. He also said your wasting my time there nothing you can do, I dont care what happen with you, you just got to pay. Then he said im going to draw up your paper work personaly right now.

Stolen cell

AUTHOR: Matthew - (U.S.A.)

No I didn't make the calls, what happen was I forgot I had the cell in my pocket on the way to the airport. After I arrived at the condo in San Pedro and I realized I had the cell so I put it away in a safe spot or I thought at least. Anyway it was stolen and I didn't know for sevral weeks. Eventually I saw a someone, a teen about 17 with a cell phone that looked like mine. I check at my place and was surprised that it was gone. Well anyway I ran into him again and pretty much took it from him. Then the next day I got a call from home and my dad told me about a bill sooo yea. Anyway I went to the cops about it, but by that time I was leaving to come back to the states.

I was having the police draw up paper work for a report so after I was gone I would have someone pick it up for me and then mail it to me, that never happen. Since all of that we having been talking back and forward with the phone company and now the debt collectors mostly insulting Sh** from them but for about 4 months now they haven't called or anything. Also I have talked with a company that workes with the collectors and they have been sucsessful in droping payments by 75% before, I know this because a friend of mine had kind of the same issue. Anyway I'm not worry about it I have back up plans and I'm goin back to Belize in Jan, my girlfriend is half way through college there. It was a unforchanet thing what happen and I wasn't as carfull as I should have been... lesson learned.

So you did...

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

make the calls and this isn't a ripoff or fraud? What "arrangement" could you have made with the phone company if your phone was stolen?

Wrong answer.

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

Every cell phone account out there has some sort of credit limit. At this point you either get a phone call or your phone is shut off.

There is more to the story here.

Also every cell provider has a fraud department.
They simply call a few of the numbers on the bill and ask if they know the account holder and if they had convertsation with them, etc.

Then the bill is written off as fraud. I have had my cell cloned on 3 different occasions and had bills similar to these. i never paid a dime, and it never went to collections.

It sounds as if the OP never went through all of the required fraud procedures, and just closed the account and let it go.

That is why it is in collections. FYI.Once an account is in collections, you cannot speak to customer service about the account at all.

Also, this post was 9 months old, so I doubt the OP will respond.

Contact AT&T

AUTHOR: Michelle - (U.S.A.)

Hello CeCe,

I have a few questions and suggestions to help you.

One thing I didn't understand after reading your report, is how the phone bill was racked up sooo high when your son left all of his excessories at home and the phone was dead. I guess the thief had a phone charger?

You have to remember that the phone companies WANT your money so there for... They will NOT call you to let you know your bill is higher than normal. How many months was your son gone?

After you received the phone bill did you report to AT&T it was stolen? Or try working with them for a solution? I don't see how you can blame the debt collector when after all the stolen phone and charges are between you and the phone company.
The extra charge at the end was probably from cancelling a year or 2 year contract you made with them... I believe that most phone companies will work with you when the phone is reported stolen. There is nothing the Debt Collector can do for you.... It's between you and the phone company.
