Look at your bill

AUTHOR: J - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, November 04, 2007

What I can draw from the information you have provided is that you had dial-up internet service and you received a bill for 1000.00. I would assume that you were using a local toll number to dial up to the internet which means you get charged a per minute rate because you are completing a local toll call to connect to the internet. If you had AT&T's "All Distance" package that can not be used for internet access, that is part of the disclosures of the plan. The terms of the plan are on their website att.com. What happens if you use it for internet access you receive a letter to call a specific telephone number to accept the terms of the plan. If you do not call in something like 15 days the all distance plan is removed and you are put on a 10c a minute plan. If you have it removed 2 times then you can not get the all distance plan back....ever. If you look at the calls on your bill you will probably see calls 100-200 minutes in length. If you find a number like that call it and you will probably here the handshake tone from the dial-up server. AT&T will make a 1 time only courtesy adjustment for 1 month of the charges but the remaining charges are your responsibility. When you register the internet you are advised during the registration process that it is the customers responsibility to make sure that the dial-up number you use is a local number and not a local toll or long distance number. If you are not sure if a telephone number is a local number you can go to localcalling.sbc.com and put in the area code and the first 3 digits of your phone number. It will tell you the area code the first 3 digits of your local area. If they are not on the list they are not local calls they are local toll or long distance. Unless you can give information that says different then I will have a say this is not a ripoff by AT&T. You, as the consumer, has to accept responsibility if this is what occurred. AT&T is not responsible to make sure that you are choosing a local number for your dial-up internet access.

Here's what to do

It does not sound like it is a scam. It sounds like you have charges that you either did not understand or are on there by mistake.

When you got the bill, it should have had the detail of the phone calls. So what is the charges made up of. Long Distance Calls, Calling Card, 900/976 Numbers? You need to go through each number called and see if you made them. If every number is one that you did call, then you probably do owe the money. If there are numbers you did not call, then those are the ones you have to dispute.

If after you have talked to ATT and still do not have a resolution, then you need to go to the next step. This includes you sending in a formal complaint to your states agency that regulates the phones. Depending on your exact state this is usually known as the PUC or Public Utilities Commission. The back of your phone bill will explain how to do this.
