Barton Resnicoff was recommended to me for my divorce from someone who said he has worked in divorce law for a long time.  He was easy to speak to and started ridiculing my soon-to-be ex-husband to my enjoyment.  I was hooked. 

I told him how much my budget was to pay for his services and asked that his office notify me not later than 1 month for each bill. I realized later that I was being fooled when I would receive a bill for time spent for a discussion that I already had with him that happened 2 months beforehand but with a different label categorizing the conversation that would happen in the present billing period. 

This happened more than 4 times. When I would bring this up, Mr. Resnicoff said he didn't know what this was and to speak with his staff. Somehow, they would negotiate a percentage of the twice-billed billable time with me and I would give in because I felt that I was already invested in Bart's law firm tens of thousands of dollars in. 

Later, Bart would argue on my behalf with fiery language that infuriated my ex-husband and baffle his lawyer.  I appreciated that Bart was trying to show aggression on my behalf, but I expected him to act professionally. 

I'm sure he deals with highly emotional people all the time, given his area of law, but to literally transcribe and send messages without a professional filter was irresponsible, idiotic, and crass because they did not achieve the intended outcome - a concession.  These messages drew backlash and boyish stubbornness while I received email alerts while I was at work.  It felt nice to hear what Bart had to say to my ex-husband and his lawyer, but the bills came in, and my budget nearly emptied. 

I told Bart that I need to end the case as soon as possible but he continued arguing with the other lawyer for a settlement conference that drew more funds in and of itself.  When I told Bart how much money I had to pay him, he said that he could refer me to a law clinic and wished me the best of luck. 

I wondered how it was that he had interns and paralegals already working for him for no or little pay - was he just using them and billing me for that time I hired him for?  I then went and begged relatives for loans, my employer for another advance, and sent the money to his office.  The divorce was final but my problems did not end there.

Bart gave me tax advice especially relating to child custody and the IRS.  My accountant said that this was a preventable matter had I consulted with almost any certified tax consultant regarding these matters during the divorce.  Again, Bart misrepresented himself in an area he believed he had expertise in.

I hope no one else has to go through what I went through with this law firm.
