On September 20, 2008, my friend and I went to Bayne Apple Valley Farm (SAGINAW COUNTY) to buy some apple products and see the cider mill. We shopped, bought appple cider and other things. I guess that wasn't good enough for this store's management because 15 min. into our visit we notice the Saginaw County police following us around the store. After we purchased our products and got in our car to LEAVE, two police officers approached us asking us questions and wanting IDs.

Me and my friend do not have criminal records or any outstanding tickets, warrants, etc. I have an MBA degree and work for the Federal US Courts. After checking our information, the officer told us the store called them to report two "suspicious" looking black guys in the store. The store was packed and were the only two African Americans in the store. No one from the store offered us an apology or tried to explain the confusion. Me and my friend were not doing anything out of the ordinary and was highly offended by this act. I will never go to this place again! Michigan has plenty of better Apple orchards to go to this one. This place SUCKS big time!

Refused to Apologize!

AUTHOR: Joe - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, February 09, 2009

I contacted Patti Bayne/Tomzack (owner), but she REFUSED to apologized for the incident. I later confirmed that she was the one who called the police. It's interesting that the police officer was honest and willing to apologize for the incident, but she refused. Whether we were two "suspicious" black guys or two "suspicious" white guys, what happen to us was just POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. You don't call the police on paying customers! Who robs an apple farm in the first place??? Had Mrs. Bayne/Tomzack only apologized for the incident I perhaps would never had taken it this far.

I told my friends and coworkers (both white & black) and they were appalled about what happen. A few were familiar with the store and made up their minds to never go to Bayne Apple Valley Farm. It's unfortunate that this owner is clueless about basic customer service, but I guess some people have to learn the hard way.

I was one of the cashiers working the day of this incident. I was offended myself just being there that day. I have a very diverse family & love everyone, I felt that these two polite young men were discriminated against because they were BLACK! I wish I had a chance to appologize, but was unable until now. Another cashier & myself talked to these two guys, they were very nice! I did not feel threteaned in any way, i thought they were just normal everyday people. My boss followed these guys around the store like they had criminal written on there forehead. She proceeded to call the police and tell everyone we were going to get robbed by these two black guys. After the incident was over, she tried to make us to sign a statement saying we felt "threatened". I did not sign anything as for I felt it was false information. She also proceeded to tell how they wanted to sue her & that they would never win. I beg to differ, if I can be of any assistance in seeking justice, please let me know =) I am sorry you had to put up with such ridiculous behavoir at Baynes Apple Valley Farm in Freeland, MI.
