I am a soldier serving in the United States Air Force currently supporting the global war on terrorism. I am writing to make a complaint about the customer service I received the day before I left for my deployment.

On December 17, 2007 my father and I purchased a 32' Sony flat panel TV. The box was damaged and we asked the sales person, Steve Luis about the box damage. He assured that the content was undamaged and if there are any problems with the content to simply come back and "they will take care of it."

After my father I arrived, we opened the box and noticed that the TV was severely damaged. The screen and frame was literally cracked in half. We took the TV back to the Best Buy we bought it at. The store manager would not provide us any service, saying that it was damaged while we were transporting it. Furthermore, he took the cart out, and removed the TV from the store without boxing it out. He contacted the local police department when my father started to become persistent. I truly believe that we were targeted because we are foreigners with accents.

I took the pictures to local competitors such as HH Gregg and Best Buy and showed them the pictures and explained them the scenario. After some research, the managers confirmed that the damage must have been done by heavy machinery such as a fork lift etc. They relayed that there is no way this TV was damaged by simply handling. Even if it was dropped, this kind of damage would have been the outcome.

I am very disappointed with how Best Buy treated us and have contacted the News agencies and Better Business Bureau on this matter to alert the public of Best Buy's corrupt sales practices. I am also posting this here to alert the public and so one becomes a statistic.

2 simple solutions here

The most obvious solution would have been to refuse the damaged box. Simply ask for a different one that has no signs of damage.

The second solution is to always pay with a credit card, so you can dispute the transaction if there is a problem.

Well, first of all, Sony does NOT manufacture plasma tvs. They only manufacture and sell LCD tv's and rear projection tv's. No plasmas. This makes the rest of your story suspect. You don't even know what you purchased. However, knowing Best Buy's history of no customer service and various rip offs, I tend to believe you in this matter. But, in the future, make sure you know what you have purchased.
