Best Buy does not disclose hidden charges in their in house warranties. My friend recently took a laptop back to them, still under warranty, to be repaired. They told her that if she wanted to save any information on the hard drive, it would cost $170.00. Nowhere on the purchase order, or information folders was this mentioned. They just spring it on you at their repair desk.
I, for one, discovered some time ago, not to purchase anything from this company, for in the past, I had to have a VCR repaired and it took eight weeks to get it back, and this was after I complained as to where was my VCR. My friend was quoted four to six weeks for repair on the computer. If my friend had mentioned to me that she was planning to go to Best Buy, I would have stopped her.

#2 Consumer Suggestion
Data Transfer/Storage not part of ANY coverage

Yep, if you purchased the protection plan, the "fine" print terms and conditions do state that data and software are exclusions from any coverage. Even if you didn't purchase a plan, same goes for mfr warranty. This is not news. Geek Squad is charging you for a service that you cannot perform, a service that can be performed by any computer shop/technician. Shop around, get a better price.

Not a rip off

The warranty documentation states that the warranty covers hardware failure. Data is not hardware. Your friend should be keeping a backup of her data.
