I recently purchased a high end Toshiba Laptop from Best Buy. I am a 63 yr old grayhaired grandmother and have used a computer for 20+ years. I install programs, set up my own network, set up internet and Email and most anything else I want to do (except take it apart!).
I have been shopping around for awhile so I kinew just which one I wanted before the salesman belatedly showed up. Probably because I didn't ask any questions and had gray hair, he profiled me as computer illiterate.
He told me that in order for me to get the computer up and running, I needed to have them keep it for a few hours and get it ready for me--calling it "Advanced Security and Performance" He said they needed to make restore disks and get the AntiVirus protection started.
I fell for it and went home without my new purchase. I returned later and took it home--all for $200 extra dollars. First thing I looked in the re-taped box for the Restore Disks. Nothing. I called the Geek Squad back and the guy said they sometimes just partition the drive and copy the Restore data there. As I hung up I thought that makes no sense, cause if you can't boot up the computer or access the hard drive, how could you even get to it in a partition.
Then I turned that baby on followed their tracks to see what they had done for me. The answer--very little and nothing I could not have done myself. They had set up MSN for me and all its doodads and email. I use Firefox and Yahoo mail . They had installed Trend antivirus (and charged extra for the software) when the computer already had Norton AV on it (albeit for a shorter term). They downloaded Windows updates. DUH!
On this matter I kicked myself mostly. However a couple of questions from the salesperson could determine if a customer actually needs these simple things done. Instead they make it sound major and mysterious. Or they could list just exactly what the service entails rather than "Advanced Security and Performance" !!
There was also another unknown charge on my receipt: 1 YR VI-SPY BTP for $29.99. So I returned to the store receipt in hand ready for battle. I decided that I couldn't ask for my money back for the work they had legitimately done, since I had stupidly agreed. But I was still mad about it because it was obviously a gimmick to get more money. Also I still didn't have the restore disks and what was vi-spy?
I went in ready for battle but SURPRISE--I guess I got the right guy on the right day because he apologized and promptly gave me my money back for the restore disk and the Vi-Spy. (VI-Spy was their service contract for a year of virus removal--should the anit-virus software they sold me not work!!) In fact he was so nice, I should have asked for all my money back!!! Now I'm kicking myself for that. . .
But the money grabbing tricks are unethical in my humble opinion.

For starters, computer illiterate makes no sense, unless it is significantly more difficult for you to read the words on a computer screen than somewhere else.
The Advanced Security and Performance was installation of an antivirus program, all windows updates, burning of recovery discs, disabling of all unnecessary startup items, and some registry tweaks. The total process on a pre-windows 7 computer could take as much as 4 hours. It is designed for people who either don't know how to do this or feel their time is worth more than that. If you feel you are only worth $25 an hour and you have the know how, then you should have done this yourself. Plus, is it that hard to ask what that extra price includes. If you aren't asking what this extra money is for, then you probably have no right to complain about it later.
Not to mention that is an outright lie, "all for $200 extra dollars", when the Advanced Security and Performance costs $100.
I can understand your frustration that you received no recovery discs when you paid for them and had an extra charge thrown on there that nobody told you about. The problem is you are spreading a bad name for a nationwide company from the mistakes of one idiot salesmen.

I just sold my ASUS gaming laptop. I am currently in college for Information Security. I am a 25 year old ex army guy. I know how computers in and out. I went to best buy the other day because I wanted a netbook instead of a huge laptop for school. The lady there assumed I didn't know anything about laptops or computers at that. The lady could not even find the power button on the netbook. She was trying to sell me that $129 restore disk crap. That they remove programs and such. Well windows 7 starter does not have anything you wont need. So why would I waste such money? Best Buy is a rip off when it comes to the geek squad.

Honestly, if you paid for something that expensive, and didn't even ask what it was, I think that might be mostly your fault. I can't speak for the store you were at, but I know all of the guys at my store thoroughly explain every service that we perform, and make sure every customer understands what is being done and how much it costs.

geek squad strikes again

I am sorry that you had to deal with the deception of best buy's, "salespeople," and the geek squad. As you can see from the Best Buy employee who also made a rebuttal, they believe they are right even when they are very wrong. Now, unforunately they seem to have provided most of the services of the Advanced Security and Performance Setup, but the sheer fact that they not provide physical restore disks proves they are wrong. With each laptop I have dealt with in the last few years (and several desktops as well) the manufacturer provides a type of restore partition which is used to generate the actual physical restore disks. For instance, on my Compaq Presario it has a 80Gb physical drive, but 8-10Gb is partitioned to the restore section. When you called them on it, the tech essetially told you what was already there and tried to make it seem like they did something. If they had admitted they made a mistake or something, hey - it happens. But no, they intentionally lied to you, and that whole, "You signed the form..." is worthless. I have helped people who have dealt with geek squad and I have yet to hear so much as ONE satisfied customer. I truly hope you learned from this and do not make the mistake of using geek squad ever again. Best Buy has quality merchandise, but their service is awful and downright decieving.

As a Best Buy Computer Associate I will say that we do in times "judge" the customer in our own mind as a basis to start our engagement. However in no way do we think that because this customer is old or young that they are illiterate. As far as your complaint about being ripped off and that we are out to make money because of your age this is completely untrue.
