on august 26, 2009, i purchased a dell studio laptop 1555. one of the deciding facgtors for my purchase was that it indicated  that i would receive a free upgrade to windows 7.

while i was paying for my purchase, i told the cashier that i wanted the upgrade to windows 7 as indicated above the sample in the store.  i was told that i had to go online to receive the free upgrade.

i tried several times online to get my free upgrade and have not been able to do so. it only brings me to where i could purchase my windows 7.  i tried calling, but after pressing several numbers and being transferred endlessly after several prompts to try to reach the right person.  I have not been able to reach a real person at bestbuy. i do not live in  yonkers; a friend drove me to pick up my purchases.

the service at the store was dismal so this  really does not surprise me, but i would really would like to receive my free upgrade to windows 7.  this amounts to false advertiising to get you to buy a particular model.

#3 UPDATE EX-employee responds

how to get your Free upgrade

AUTHOR: Kristy - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, October 06, 2009

the Free upgrade to Windows 7 comes directly from Dell. not Best Buy...

you can either contact Dell Tech support on the phone or visit  www dell.com /windows7   fill out the form and in a few weeks (probably around November 11th) you will end up getting the disks from Dell in the mail.

since I no longer work for Geek Squad..

I've been told the disks the OEM's send out of Windows7 are not Retail (or even a standard OEM) copy of Windows7 but rather specific to the serial# /model of your PC.. and wont physically install on any other PC. but you can install the OS yourself in about 1-2hrs.

Best Buy will NOT install Windows7 for you FREE.. Typically they will charge around $130 for any OS install...  someone told me they were offering a $40 upgrade (from Vista to Windows7) for customers that purchased a PC from there store  after the june 26th date.. the difference here is that they GIVE you a copy of Windows7 DVD on the spot and it's an OEM copy -vs- having to wait for the disks to arrive.. check with a Geek Squad manager at a local store for more info.

The upgrades won't be available until next month. I bought a new computer too and am waiting for the upgrade as you are.

I think that the upgrade discs will come from your computer's manufacturer. You also have to register the computer and send in your receipt.

Upgrade..

It seems as if you got some bad or incomplete information from the Best Buy employees.  Windows 7 does not get released to the public until October 22nd.  Until that time it will be impossible for you to get the upgrade.  These type of upgrade offers are done all the time when a new Operating System is due out.  If they didn't do this their computer sales would drop dramatically in the months before the release.  They employees may have given you some inaccurate information but it is not a RipOff.  I can almost guarantee you that when it is released you will be able to get the upgrade.
