I't been a few years, since I discovered this, but doubt the BBB's policy has changed.
I ordered services from a BBB member company that were substandard. The company refused to issue a refund (even though they admitted that that I was correct and they were at fault) so I filed with the BBB. The BBB found that there was enough evidence to warrant the next step in the process - arbitration.
Now here's the kicker. My request was for a refund of $59. The cost for arbitration was $79. I had no guarantee that I would get my $59, but even if I did, I would have paid $79 to get it.
The BBB stood firm with their policy and the member company continues to rip off individuals AND keep their GOOD STANDING with the BBB. Pretty slick.
So be aware that ANY BBB claims filed better be for more than $79 or it is a colossal waste of time. It took the BBB months to respond and tell me it would cost me $79 to try and get my $59 back. And when asked them point blank if that made any sense to them - they had no answer.
This is just one of many encounters that I've had with the BBB that reinforces that this is a completely worthless entity that gives consumers a false sense of security.

Small claims court
AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

Small claims court is a much better option.
When you win in small claims court, your filing and court costs are usually automatically added to the amount of your award. Further, when you win and the defendant does NOT pay you in a reasonable time, you may go back to small claims court and request acourt enforcement order that may include any of the following:
lien against property of value such as a car, boat, RV, etc.
lien agains real property.
levy against bank accounts.
garnishment of wages.
With a money judgment, you may also hire a collection agency to attempt to collect the monies owed and you may report the delinquent money judgment to the credit reporting agencies for the defendant.
Also, in most states the statute of limitations for a money judgment is significantly longer than for other debt. Here in NY, the SOL for a money judgment is 20 YEARS and it can be renewed for another 20 years. Further, in many states, a small claims money judgment can be levied against any STATE income tax refunds and state lottery winnings.
Keep this in mind for the future.
