Aging BMW

AUTHOR: James MK - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, January 12, 2012

That is an older model and if it's anything like my 540i what you are experiencing is not abnormal. It's unlikely that a cracked engine cover can be the result of an inspection at a dealership regardless of the way they drive customers cars on the lot. Let's face it most lot attendants everywhere drive like idiots, but rarely cause engine damage.

I guess it's an unfortunate coincidence that your engine failed the same day it was inspected but BMW's are fragile and prone to internal coolant leaks that lead to overheating and busted head gaskets. I don't know why you smelled oil though, as it's likely mostly antifreeze that got sprayed around the engine compartment. Past a certain age those cars require a lot of pampering. Although I trust mine because I maintain it myself I still won't use it for long drives, for that I use a much studier minivan lol
