California Family Fitness Billing me for an extra month after I terminated my membership, Sending me to collections Ripoff Sacramento California

I've had a "month to month" membership with Cal fit. for a couple of years which my membership cost $44.00. I rarely used it so a few months ago I quit the membership. The company says I still owe them another $44.00 for the month after I canceled my membership. I was told It takes 30 Days to cancel a membership and I owe them for a month in which I wouldn't use thier facilities. In addition to the $44.00 now they have tacked on late fees amounting to $6.94 bringing my total to $50.94. How is this legal? Since when can you be charged for an extra month after you quit? I have no intention of paying for another month of membership, thats what quitting means. Now the company is sending me to a collection agency. I have allready paid them over a $1000.00 for which I used their facility maybe two dozen times. I refuse to pay even if it goes to collections.
