Born, raised, and lived most my life in CA. Last job on the books was in 2013. Got sick and couldn't work other than odd jobs for friends and family and lived off savings while looking for work till my wife and I moved out of state to Michigan in late 2015. Nov. 2015 I found work in my new hometown in MI, and have been employed here ever since. The move drained our finances and stretched our credit to the breaking point. Now halfway through 2018, we finally found ourselves climbing back out of the financial hole and starting to save again. Got my savings account up to a meager 1,450.01, one whole cent in interest accrued from the previous month lol, but things were looking up and stabilizing. Yesterday morning I went online to check my balances and pending transactions only to find my savings account wiped out entirely courtesy of the CA ftb. Didn't even leave me my last penny, took everything. No notice. No calls, letters, emails, nothing. Just blindsided and left with an empty account. It's been d**n near three years since I've even lived in California, and five since I've held a job there. This conveniently happened late Friday afternoon, so by the time I became aware of it, the ftb office was closed, being a saturday, and I could not get anywhere with it. I had no outstanding tax liability in CA, in fact, I always received a refund when I did my taxes, I never owed. Somehow these monkeys are able to take anyone's money without notice, explanation, or cause? I am livid to say the least. I hope to provide an update as soon as I get some answers, and I desperately hope it is good news. I work hard, I play by the rules, and I may not have much, but what I do have I've earned. This is unscrupulous and downright dirty thievery.

Update: not all is always as it seems...

AUTHOR: Ödland - (United States)

POSTED: Friday, August 17, 2018

So, being the short fuse, I wrote my complaint based on the known facts at that early time. The California franchise tax board was not at the heart of this debacle, but administering payment of a judgment, not against me, but my darling wife. See, she isn't as responsible in her spending as I, so in pursuit of fairness, we hold our own bank accounts and make our own budgets. After we each factor in our half of bills, the remainder is our own to do as we wish. Being as she got into debt, and with threat of garnishments, she voluntarily removed herself from our joint bank account(s). We thought.. When requesting her removal from our shared account, we assumed it was for both checking, and savings. It was also never stated the process was to be repeated for each account, not a one and done thing. So... with judgement's against herself only, they went after the one account still in her name. The one we had no idea she was still listed on. The one I stashed my own money into for savings. And for that, I'm out 1,450.01. Ain't love grand? Not her fault. Not the ftb. If anyone's mine I must figure. Shoulda been more observant in the details. For a healthy serving of humble pie, when I did contact the CA ftb, I was treated well. One representative in particular was quite pleasant to deal with, and especially helpful in looking into this mess. (Thanx, Joe.) In short, I take back the hostility I leveled at the CA ftb. Wasn't their doing.

The Gas Between Louisiana and California costs more than $2,000

AUTHOR: Jim - (United States)

POSTED: Monday, August 13, 2018

If you honestly believe $2000 is steep, you should never have used a mover.  You probably should have considered selling your furniture and starting over in California.  The fuel for the truck to move your stuff to California alone costs more than $2000; add the labor in, and your move would really cost closer to $4,000 or more depending on how much stuff you have.  My guess is that you're likely to have to offer to pay more (a lot more) if you're going to see your furniture.  You should have simply rented a U-Haul and done the trip yourself if you really thought $2000 was too much.  If I had to guess, your stuff is still in Louisiana waiting for someone who needs to get to CA.

Moving is not inexpensive; there is nothing automated and no cheap way to move your items across the country.  Looking on the internet for a mover, which is how you found these guys (I mean there are movers in Louisiana - why look to Florida for a mover?) is the dumbest thing you can do because that's where all the rip off artists live.  Most rip off movers are also located in Florida....  Best of luck to you....
