In order to provide a great educational experience for potential students Cal Southern University has a proprietary model that looks at all students as prospective learners. They provide information about the school to see if the university is the right fit for them. Unlike other for-profit institutions which actively advertise to enroll students, Cal Southern takes a passive approach to see if they are a good fit. They have created a mandatory login for courses, which can be done at the students discretion based on their schedule and convenience factor. They have incorporated a mentor based learning model which allows students to be connected to their Advisor, Associate Dean, and Dean.

California Southern University is currently accredited with Distance Education Learning and are in the eligibility stage of WASC.

All of the professors at their university have one degree higher than what they are teaching, unless it is a terminal degree (Ph.D). Each has a masters with 18 credits from regionally accredited schools.

Customer Care

Since complaints were made on Ripoff Report, their university has made some changes to provide a better level of understanding about the expectations that they expect from prospective students. For example, now both students and alumni have complete access to an easy to navigate website with all details for them to understand and to provide them with standard information about the institution.

If a complaint is made, there are certain standards they take to effectively resolve them. Student complaints can come at different levels: to the advisor, associate dean, and dean. These issues are usually resolved immediately. There is an official complaint procedure for policy or performance, and it is published. There is also a formalized process that keeps track of all complaints and these reports are available to the accreditation agency. If they disagree with the decision, they can appeal it to higher levels. Most of their complaints require further clarification, and very few go past the dean.

During the onsite interview, executive members of the administration were was asked how they would handle a situation where a student has enrolled in courses, but their expectations were not met: “I would have regular check-ins with their academic advisor. There is a 10-day check if they are falling back on their coursework. They have the ability to add or drop within 14 days within the next month and get a 100% refund within the first week, and after that it is a sliding scale. If they don’t perform, they are put on academic probation and are dismissed if they still continue to perform poorly after two extensions.

Typical faculty members used at California Southern University

Dr. Bob Weathers - estemed faculty memeber at the university

California Department of Consumer Affairs Board of Psychology accepted the surrender of Robert Satnley Weathers, Ph.D.'s license to practice psychology.

According to the boards accusations and stippulated surrender of license and order, Weathers engaged in a sexual realtionship with his patient.

Robert Weathers was also romanticly involved with a graduate studnt while he was a professor at Pepperdine University and lost his professorship and tenure.

Once I realized this man was part of the faculty, I dropped out of the Psychology program,. I decided I would switch to criminal justice.

I looked up another esteemed faculty member and saw Former Police Chief Tommy Tunnson listed, he is a fired Police Chief from the city of Arvin...

Why would the university hire people  like this?

If you want to go to a university that hires people that loose their license, because they sleep with their patients and Police Chiefs that are fired, this is the university for you.

Diploma mills can't aford to hire good people so this is what you get.  I was told by my counselor that they were WASC accredited, but I found out when I started they weren't.

Do your home work before applying to the wrong school.  Research the faculty and accreditation.

Information claimed in the report is inaccurate

AUTHOR: CentralOC - ()

POSTED: Thursday, April 04, 2013

The report expresses concern that Dr Weathers surrendured his license to practice psychology in 2010 due to an inappropriate sexual relationship with a patient.  That claim is only partially true.  According to the Dept of Consumer Affairs, however, Dr Weathers DID NOT engage in sexual activity during the time she was his patient.  It expressly states this occured after her treatment had concluded.  The issue at hand was the length of time after it happened (CA has a window of 2 years).  A year after treating the patient, Dr Weathers relocated to New Hampshire.  A sexual relationship with his former patient began after that, and they eventually married.  The report with Consumer Affiars in CA was not filed until after they later divorced, and Dr Weathers relocated to CA.  He had no longer been practicing psycology at the time he surrendered his license (many in the teaching profesion no longer have licenses to practice in their respective states).

Regarding concern that Dr Weathers' relationship with a student while at Pepperdine, this occured prior to 2001.  He thereafter went to teach at California State University, San Bernardino, and Loma Linda University.  It would seem odd to take issue with his involvement at CalSouthen, but not have a problem with his involvement at Cal State San Bernardino or Loma Linday University.

Regarding Tommy Tunson, the facts claimed are likewise in error.  The local news carried numerous stories citing Tunson as having been wrongfully terminated.  In fact, a wrongful termination lawsuit was filed by Tunson.  The matter was settled out of court when he was reinstated as an employee of the city, and afterwards allowed to retire in good standing.

Lastly is the issue of accredidation.  Again, the claimant is in error.  CalSouthern is nationally accredited by the DETC, and is currently a candidate for regional accredidation by WASC.  CalSouthern makes no secret about this.  This information is readily available on their website, and a call to CalSouthern's admissions office conirms it.  I suspect the claimant misunderstood what he was told about WASC accreditation.  However, since CalSouthern is likely to be WASC accredited by the time the claimant graduates, this concern might be a nonissue.
