I pulled up to my girlfriends apartment to unload her groceries from my vehicle into her apartment. She went inside to grab a visitors pass and I took a load of groceries to her room. In the 15 seconds it took me to walk from my truck to her room and back, a Camcar driver, named Anthony, hooked my truck and started to drive off with it as I exited the front door. I chased the guy down and asked him to drop my truck since were there for 15 seconds and we were grabbing a visitors pass.

He asked for $98 to drop the truck, but being in the city I dont carry around that amount of cash. I asked to at least grab the luggage and groceries she had in the bed of the truck but he rudely ignored me and asked for the $98 or he was taking the truck to the lot. At this moment a couple that had seen the Camcar driver tow my vehicle came to the scene and said they watched this guy sit in his truck and wait for me to walk away from it.

As soon as I left the vehicle he reversed his tow truck and hooked up to my vehicle and began to drive off. All this happened in 15 seconds. This practice of stalking drivers seems to be a problem in Columbus. I asked the local police department about the Camcar company. They replied that many individuals refer to them as "Scamcar." But in the end there was nothing I could do.This towing company is ruthless and stalking drivers while they do everyday things. Camcar is a terrible agency that practices predatory methods in order to steal others had earned money.

Sometimes the tables are turned

AUTHOR: Adolph - (U.S.A.)

Here's an interesting event. Tow truck driver-0, motorist -1.

Maybe sometimes these bottom-feeders bite off more than they can tow, eh?

OSU is notorious for towing

AUTHOR: A|ex - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, October 20, 2007

i had the same thing done but by a different tow company. i was able to get into the car before he left the property and i started honking the horn. he finally unhitched me. this was back in 1995. the towing practice was still popular then as it is now.

a little note: a motorcycle can be hitched within 5 seconds. depending on the position of the car, it too can be hitched in 10 seconds. i've seen a motorcycle get stolen in about 3 seconds.

All in "15 seconds" ???

AUTHOR: Tallulah-phoebe - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, October 20, 2007

I find it extremely hard to believe that in only "15 seconds," you parked your car, exited the car, carried a load of something into an apartment, returned to said car where you saw it being loaded up onto a tow truck and towed away. Obviously you are exaggerating a wee bit, and I do believe you left out a very important detail -- that you had parked your car ILLEGALLY, in either a fire zone or other 'no parking' zone, or in a manner which blocked the flow of traffic. If you want sympathy for your plight, tell your story factually and truthfully, without fabrication.

#2 Consumer Suggestion

Ohio Law

AUTHOR: Jeff - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, October 20, 2007

I suggest that you review the Ohio Revised Code regarding this issue: http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/4513.60

The towing companies in Columbus are very shady, from your story I gather that the driver was going to pocket the money and not report it to the company. Since ORC states that towing charges cannot exceed $90, and the owner of the vehicle has the right to demand the driver drop the vehicle as long as it has not left the property for a fee no greater than one half of the cost of the tow.

In areas such as Ohio State and through out Columbus, these operators are looking to take advantage of the uninformed.

While the tow may have been justified since you did not have a permit, the fact that the operator watched and waited for you to go inside to tow your vehicle demonstates the corruptness of this company.

If where you parked was marked "Tow Away Zone" or "Fire Zone - No Parking" then you are stuck...

AUTHOR: Thomas - (U.S.A.)

If you were simply on private property, then take your problem up with management. And next time if a pass is all you need, get it ahead of time. The owners of private property can be as hard-nosed or as accomodating as they wish to be. This is one of the rights of being a property owner!

The policeman took a sympathetic position probably because he did not wish to upset you further. Otherwise you might have become disruptive etc. and he would then have to arrest you for disorderly conduct, which would add to your problems. People will act in ways injurious to their situation when they are angry or upset.
