I asked them if the meat was local and if the company sought out humane practices for the meat. The representative told me that it was humane, grass-fed, cage-free, etc. He kept on trying to get me to purchase three cases with 6 boxes of meat inside each for about $1200. He also continually told me not to tell my neighbors how much he was letting me pay for it, because they would be jealous that I got such a low rate. I told him that my husband didn't really eat seafood, so I wasn't really interested in that at all. He then started saying that I could get any combination of meat that I wanted, but that I needed to take three cases off their hands. They also offered to go out to Sears and buy a freezer and kept telling me how easily everything would fit into my freezer.
I quickly ran inside and did a google search just to make sure they were a real company, and unfortunately the company website came up before the dozens of rip off/scam reports that are all over the internet about them, so I missed it on my first search!
Looking at their website offer, I saw that they were selling three cases of meat with a free freezer for the same price the men had offered me, so I knew that they were lying about this being a deal. I had a bad feeling about the whole thing, but was still thinking it might be nice to have individually frozen pieces -- if it was actually good quality, local, humane (etc) meat. When I went back outside I told them that I didn't think it was the right time for me to be making such a big purchase, especially because I had never tried their products, and the more experienced salesman stepped in and started guilt tripping me like you wouldn't believe. And he was extremely mean! He said they had already spent so much time with me that would now be wasted and the meat just needed to go somewhere good. He also implied that I couldn't buy the products without my husbands consent, and wasn't I independent enough to be able to make a decision on my own? He then said that I could buy a much smaller amount (just 1 case/six boxes) for $265. At that point I just wanted to get rid of them, so I said I would do it.
Then of course they got all friendly again. When they left, I went back inside and saw that there are so many complaints about them.
My husband and I went through all of the meat packages and found that the $/lb is a horrible rip off, especially because according to their website it's just normal meat and not local/humanely raised. We didn't try any of it.
The next day I used the Maryland Door-to-Door Sales Act to get my money back and return the meat. Someone called me about 7 days later (they have 10 days to refund the money) to tell me I could keep all of the meat and they would give me back $100. I said absolutely not and I wanted all of my money back. The man said someone would be in touch with me soon to coordinate picking it up. I didn't hear from anyone again until I sent another certified letter (about 3 weeks after the first one -- way later than the law allows them) to tell them I was going to throw all of the meat away and start the process of disputing the credit card charge if I didn't have all of my money back within another 10 days.
I finally got the money back about a week later and then began the fun of getting the meat picked up. They got very anxious to have it back once I actually got my money back. They picked up the meat about 40 days from the day I sent the first certified mail letter (they have 20 days to pick up the product).
To top it all off, I live in a rural/green/clean area, and walked outside right after the same guy who sold me the meat left with it back in his truck to find a fresh cigarette butt right next to where he was parked. I guess my lawn looks like an ashtray to him. What a great way to end the whole catastrophe.
The names of the representatives were John and I believe JD.
