I had a horrible experience w/ carmel movers when moving coast-to-coast. Not only was my shipment horribly delayed, but we were overcharged and presented with fraudulent documentation of that charge. Below is a copy of a letter that was posted electronically to the Florida Attorney General's website.

I wish to file the following complaints against carmel movers (the Mover"):
1. Fraud
2. Gross Negligence
3. Making False & Misleading Statements
4. Intentional Deception in order to increase charges

We contracted the Mover" to transport our household goods from New York, New York to Portland, Oregon. The agreed charge was $0.70 per pound of weight to move our goods. Based on an online estimate, my anticipated charge was $3503.50, based on 5,500 pounds of weight. We agreed on a move date of July 7th, 2007 at 8am.

On the move date, the representatives of the Mover were over 2 hours late. Had they arrived to our apartment at the agreed-upon time, there was ample parking on our side of the street for their truck. When they arrived, there was not enough street parking available on our side of the street. I spoke with the landlord of my building, and received permission to have the Mover park their truck on the sidewalk.

The Mover refused to park on the sidewalk, instead insisting that I pay for a rental truck to pick up my goods. I was then assessed the first additional charge of $450.

Not only was I assessed an additional unwarranted charge, but the Mover's representatives did not return for over six hours, despite a promise from their dispatcher that they would return within two to three hours.

During the loading of my household goods, I tracked the Mover's representatives as they used tape to wrap blankets around furniture. Many tape rolls were partially used prior to being discarded. I was charged $5 per roll used to blanket-wrap my goods.

I also witnessed the Mover's representatives loading boxes of packed goods onto hand trucks to transport to the truck downstairs. More often than not, my boxes were stacked haphazardly, with boxes labeled fragile' underneath boxes labeled heavy'.

Once all of my possessions were loaded onto their truck, the real issues began.

During the wait from pick-up to drop-off of my goods, the Mover did not provide a weight receipt for my goods. After a third request (and mention of having our lawyer call) they released a weight receipt for our goods.

The truck carrying our possessions was alledgedly weighed on July 7th, 2007 at New York Sand & Gravel (the Weigher"), located at 63 Flushing Ave in Brooklyn, New York. When we received the receipt from the Mover, we contacted the Weigher to ascertain whether the receipt was valid. Once we had faxed a copy of the receipt to the Weigher, we were contacted by Tom Dooley, General Manager. He mentioned that this document was fraudulent based on the following conditions: the Weigher had discontinued weighing of trucks on July 1st and the receipt appeared to be doctored as it was not correct.

Based on the comments of Tom Dooley and the fact that the loading of my truck was not complete until 7PM at night, I believe that the Mover committed fraud by providing this receipt. This fraudulent receipt resulted in an additional charge of $3,151.50 due to added weight.

Further, the Mover did not complete the move in a timely fashion. My personal belongings were put in storage for an unknown time period before the final delivery of my goods was sub-contracted to another firm. During the storage and transportation of my shipment, over $10,000 dollars of damage were done to the goods being transported as well as over $2,000 of damage to my new home.

It took many frustrating phone calls to the Mover to be supplied a delivery date for my goods. The Mover's slogan is You're never far from service you can trust". They also claim to help make a difficult transition easy. Needless to say, neither of these claims held true to my experience in dealing with this company.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY EVER!

CARMEL MOVERS IS A SCAM

AUTHOR: Toni - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, November 17, 2008

THIS IS ONE MORE CARMEL MOVERS CUST
They quoted me $2400.00 and demanded $12, 400.00 when they arrived. I hired a lawyer to sue them. The lawyer negotiated them down to $6000.00, which is still $3600.00 over their quote to move me 482 miles. After over 5 month without our household goods, I relinquished and paid them the $6000.00.

After receiving my money, they called the next day and told me they still will not deliver my household goods. This company is one of the most organized ripoff scams I have ever heard of. They are not to be trusted or to be hired. STAY AWAY!

In addition, the poster named Maria that posted the glowing review of this company is the person I first dealt with in the company.

I went with these guys, even though more expensive than others because the sales lady was really good. She said they were professional movers, not just guys off the street. That they wore uniforms and that they used blankets on everything to protect.

They didnt arrived on time. didnt Worked hard. didnt Used blankets, and damage my furniture and house. These guys were hardly professional movers though. The uniform was a tee shirt that had the company logo, and only one guy wore that. Only one of the two movers even spoke english, so I'm doubting these guys could be called professional movers (maybe in a different country).

The big let down was that they stole my change jar (approx. $200). And made off with about 200 hot wheels cars. The guy that spoke english had told me about his children, and my father even witnessed the same guy unpacking the cars into a different box from where I had put them! So yes there were definitely stolen.

Don't use these guys no matter how good the sales lady is.

carmel movers is a scam !!!This is extortion!

AUTHOR: Toni - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, November 08, 2008

We are extremely dissatisfied with carmel movers!
I am writing you on behalf of my son Ben (Russell) who is so stressed out over this, he is beside himself.
Ben relocated from San Diego to Monterey, Ca.
The week of November 1th, 2008, Ben contacted carmel movers.
Ben paid caemel movers (Frank) $1040.00 in cash as they stated that their credit machine was down and could only accept cash (the first red flag)!
carmel movers(Frank) assured Ben that all of his belongings would arrive Friday
Ben tried calling carmel movers at all the provided phone numbers starting at 8:00 A.M. to make sure everything was on schedule as he took the day off from his new job.
He either got no answer at all or a voice message stating "no one was in the office".. Ben left a voice mail.
He then tried to email carmel movers to no avail! Friday came and went and Ben never received his belongings nor a return phone call or email.
Saturday & Sunday came and went. Ben left several phone messages and emails throughout the entire weekend. Not a single return reply!
Enough was enough, so I called on his behalf Monday. I spoke with Frank . He was rude, inconsiderate and a plain "jerk" to me. He said the truck broke down and no one works on the weekends. I asked why someone didn't bother to even call Ben. He kept repeating that it wasn't their fault and blah blah blah!!
Frank finally agreed that the truck would be there with Ben's belongings absolutely no alter that 8:00 A.M. today . Of course as you can guess by now 8:00AM came and went. Ben had to call carmel movers again and Frank told Ben that it would be another 4 hours before they would come.
Now the truck comes 4 days later than promised and they demand another $1200 in cash before they will unload the truck! This is insane and totally unacceptable! Ben was so upset and he called me.
I call caemel movers and spoke to Frank once again. He told me that he would only accept $1200 in cash before he instructed the movers to unload a single item from the truck. I asked Frank if he really thought that this was fair? He told me "yes" and hung up on me!
Both Ben and Myself called Frank and he finally agreed to take Ben's credit card.
This is absolutely unacceptable and this is far from over.
I can not believe that carmel movers has the gull to charge another $1200 on top of the already paid $1240. This is extortion!
Ben has moved a few times and I have as well and we NEVER encountered anything close to this complete and unprofessional company!
I have contacted The Better Business Bureau and The US Department of Transportation as well as my attorney.
