You are not being scammed. Your post tells me that you made a debit/credit purchase. The costs of using credit/debit means that you pay a higher per gallon price to cover your purchase. You can point your ire towards the card companies as they are the ones who have raised the costs of use. The business is only passing the fee on to the customer. This raises your per gallon price. I'm sure if you paid attention to the national banking and credit information as the retailers have to you would have been aware of it. You should remember a few years ago when your banking institution sent out petitions to stop/support  the issue. You may have just realized that the debit/credit card companies had raised their fees. Some businesses eat the cost of your per swipe purchases. YOU think of cards as cash but they are not cash. It is not legal tender. It's a way to pay for something but there IS fees. In your instance I'm sure you just walked up and told them to put xx dollars on a pump. In the future understand that debit purchases cost somewhere and sometimes it costs you to use it.  Technically AA gas station can claim the price they advertise is the "legal tender" or "cash" price. Legally they would be protected as any purchase would be done with legal tender. A debit card on the ground with $100 on it won't buy you squat whereas a $100.00 bill is legal tender and able  to be spent anywhere by anyone. Personally if I need to put gas in my vehicle I just ask for cash back ame use it in my tank. I get the free use of my debit card and I get cash so I get the cheaper price.
