In the past 4 months I have been solicited by several "Save on Energy" companies. The latest was Citizens Choice Energy. The young man at my door was wearing a badge on a chain around neck and holding a clip board. I inquired as to what he was offering.... he stated "I could save money on my energy usage". I asked for a number to the company so I can contact myself. He stated "until you qualify, you cant contact the company" I asked how do I qualify? he asked to see my energy bill. I told him "NO you will not see my bill and could I please have a number or a card/pamphlet". He stated he had nothing to give me. A local police officer stopped to investigate the vivid conversation happening on my porch. The officer asked if young man had a pedlars licence.. response was "NO, my manager just dropped me of to work this area". Officer asked, "besides that ID badge hanging on your neck, do you have any form of ID?" response "NO". Officer removes man from my porch and walks him to patrol car, young man makes a phone call, 3 minutes later his manager arrives. officer asked a couple of questions and both were helped to back of patrol car and taken to the station. How is it that a company sends their employees door to door with no ID, no information to pass to the customer? This is a far cry from good business ethics. I have been cautioned by friends and family that the "Energy saving" companies are not forthrite with the promises made. That all though you may save a few dollars at the start, in the long run there is no real savings and that there always seems to be a conflict with the local energy supplier and the Energy saving company.

"Our independent representatives are sometimes unaware of the various local and municipal rules and regulations regarding door to door sales.  You cant fault someone for just doing their job. Also, its hard to imagine anyone alive that hasn't forgotten their ID's/wallet at home at some point or another. "

   Anyone else find it ironic that the above statements were made in a post entitled "Proper Training and Business Ethics"?   What a hoot!

Citizen's Choice Energy prides itself  in our energy program as well as our employees.  All of our employees undergo a rigorous training program which teaches them the best way to identify if an individual qualifies for savings; which is by viewing an old or new copy of the utility bill.  

I too had someone come to our door a couple of weeks back.  He stated he was doing a survey and needed to see my electric bill.  I asked him what survey was National Grid conducting?  I also asked to see his City of Buffalo Solicitors Permit which he didn't have.  How ethical is a company that doesn't bother to obtain the proper solicitors permit?

An independent representative can only determine this by actually viewing the bill.   It is also not uncommon for our independents representatives to run out of printed materials for while out working a particular area all day.

What is it?  Are they employees or independent contractors?  You can't have it both ways.  Here in NY, the issue hinges on who has controll; work hours, area, etc.

Seems to me YOU should be checking into that for them.

I can fault companies that operate this way.  Let me guess; you buss college students to blanket a neighborhood and then move on to another turf-real ethical.

Yeah right. I believe you.  It isn't about forgetting a wallet, it's about having the PERMIT.  Part of the permit process is to verify the identity of the people going door to door and to verify that they are representing a legitimate business.

 All of our independents representatives are provided with a work ID acknowledging who they are marketing for.

NOT GOOD ENOUGH in the City of Buffalo and other municipalities.  Anyone can print up any type of ID, laminate it, and hang it about their neck.

To make a long story short, our two representatives where only taken away for two reasons; to validate identification and and to issue them summons for not having a peddlers license. They where immediately released.

The were hauled away to be issued the summons for not having a permit.  This is not the former U.S.S.R. where one needs walking papers.  Tell us, if these "independent reps" get fined, who's going to pay it?

Lastly, IAW NY State law, my doors are clearly marked with proper "NO SOLICITING" signage.  What this means is that by ringing my door and attempted to sell me a service (uninvited) they are TRESSPASSING.  It's added gravy if they don't have a solicitors permit.

Be assured that myself and my neighbors will NOT do business with any outfit that operates in this fashion.  This past summer it seems we have been invaded by these non-permitted  "representatives" bothering folks during the dinner hour (not just for energy services.) 

As a group we have complained to the City and to our Councilman and we have been assured that in the future, if we call 911 for these "un-permitted" reps pestering us they will be "picked up, summoned, and FINED."  Our councilman told us to post the appropriate "NO SOLICITING" signage so that they can be charged with tresspassing-about 1/3 of my neighbors NOW have such signage on all of the entrance doors.

Perhaps you should let these "independent reps" know about this before you drop then off to canvas a neighborhood.

You've been warned. The next time these reps ring my door in north Buffalo, I'm calling the cops and pressing a complaint.
