Talk about kick em when their down!

My wife and I have been members of Cobb County EMC in Cobb County GA for over 10 years, and have always paid our bills on time until recently. Last year I took a pay cut, and my wife lost her job. We adjusted. This year I took a reduction in hours. Like many Americans right now I am looking for a new job, but as you all know the job market is still in the tank.

As a result of our financial woes all of our bills have fallen behind. We have tried to keep our utilities to just under 30 days behind, but one month we went over 30 days behind on our COMM EMC bill.

When we went to pay our bill we were charged a 200 dollar deposit. I have negotiated them down to 100 dollars, but obviously if I had an extra 100 dollars sitting around I wouldnt be behind on my bill! This is a ridiculous and unneccesary charge coming from a supposedly not for profit organization. They have threatened to shut off my electricity if I do not comply with paying this deposit.

Doing some google searching I see not only are their other similar complaints about this organization but they also have been involved in a lengthy lawsuit brought against them by their customers.

There are no other options for electricity in Cobb County GA. They have a monopoly. I thought monopolies were illegal in this country?!

This organization needs to be disbanded and the electricity needs to be privatized.

There are Exceptions to the Monopoly Laws

AUTHOR: OHara - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, October 21, 2010

Yep, most monopolies are illegal but utilities are called "beneficial monopolies" and do not fall under the monopoly regulations.  As you can see, that leads them to believe they have ultimate power and can abuse their customers.  This is common among "Beneficial monopolies."

I can also tell you when you're suffering, there will be a line to get to you to rip you off and Cobb EMC is only one of those that want to make your suffering worse.

I had been a Cobb EMC customer for about 20 years with a perfect payment record when i suffered a short economic downturn and fell behind almost a month.  Like you, I was required to put up an additional very large deposit while the deposit I had made was more than any bill I had ever gotten.  I asked them why they needed a deposit that much larger than any bill I had ever received when I had a perfect past payment record?  They could give me no answer.

Thankfully, I no longer live in Cobb County! I no longer have to put up with the greed and abuse.  I doubt I'll ever live in Cobb County again and it's not just Cobb EMC.
