This is simple case of receiving an unsolicited email about automotive extended warranties and asking for a quote for an extended vehicle warranty quote. I thought the quote would be electronic with a link to seeing the terms and conditions of extended vehicle warranty.

What's described next is the sales process from Continental Warranty for their Freedom + warranty plan. While I expected an electronic quote I received a phone call (on my cell phone no less) from a guy who called himself Chuck Hart. He's a smooth salesman and after giving him my VIN number and mileage I was told I would buy the Freedom + warranty plan. He proceeded paint a picture of an extended warranty for my low mileage Taurus that would cover everything with simple $50 co-pay. After listing almost every vehicle system, sub-system, component and part in one breathless sales pitch you feel compelled to buy. I was offered a 37 month, 37,000 mile warranty for my 1999 Taurus for $1428. He chortled, "Everything that is covered is listed on the warranty as opposed to other companies that list exclusions." This was mentioned a couple of times so I decided I have got to see the actual contract and the list of parts covered. Listing covered parts is odd. It is odd because there are well over 30,000 parts in a vehicle. So any warranty written and structured to only cover the parts listed would require a pages and pages if the warranty was as comprehensive as it was represented to be. But wait, there is more.

The last step of the phone sale to me was to talk about how to pay for the warranty. Of course, I could pay for it all up front, or finance it with 0% interest over 6 months with a down payment of $245 and six easy payment of $197.17.

Here is where I ended the phone call. I had the temerity to ask to see a written copy of the warranty including what was covered BEFORE spending any money. The salesman, Chuck Hart, said, "In order for the contract to be released some money has to change hands." That's double speak for I had to pay $245 to see what was covered. I hung up the phone. Not surprisingly, the salesman did not call back.

These guys are scam artists. Watch out for them, you may buy yourself a very expensive extended warranty that doesn't cover what breaks on you car or truck

These are the type of companies that send out unsolicited postcards that they make up to look like recall notices and scare the hell out of people to call them and lo and behold, a sales pitch! I get 3 or 4 calls a week from people wondering what the recall is on their vehicle because of these yokels. Here's a thought. Save that 1400 dollars and tell them to stick it.
