In researching extended warranty plans for an automobile I am planning to purchase I made the mistake of happenng upon this company's web site. After filling out some basic contact information, I was contacted yesterday day by phone.

It became obvious after about 10 minutes of listening to a highly choreograped sales pitch that continually rebuffed my repeated requests to dispense with the script and simply give me coverage and price information, that I was dealing with a boiler room style high pressure sales group.

When I expressed my displeasure with the inability to get coverage and price data and told them I intended to end the call a supervisor quickly jumped on the line and attempted to get back to the sales pitch.

This company called back even though I told them at the end of the first call that I was not interested in their product. I gave them a second chance to provide price and coverage data to no avail. It was quite obvious that their sales tactics involve controlling the conversation and sticking to the pitch, continually rebuffing any attempt by the customer to obtain the price and coverage information with replies such as " that information is coming up on the computer now" and 5 minutes later " I'll have that information up on the computer in a minute"

As of 8:30 PM I have received three phone calls today- after telling them each time that I was not interested in their product and wished to be placed on their do not call list.

In the event of future calls I intend to call the Malibu Police Station 818-878-1808 and file a complaint.

I also intend to put my phone on "speaker", inform them that I intend to tape the conversation and make sure that the tape records my request to receive no more calls from them.

Take my advice Do not give this company your contact information.

I lost the bet

Robert,

I admit I was wrong, typically people with similiar complaints to yours are high mileage and out of factory warranty, I apologize for the wrong comment.

So you want us to do business like our competitors let me tell you why I thank God everyday we don't and please read this and don't think I am trying to convince you, but these are straight facts:

1. You say that google searches and sites like this show we are high pressure rip offs, I say they show how good of a company and here is why. Our oldest complaint on this site is 2004, which shows we have been in business for the last 4 years operating this way, we actually have been doing this business since 1988 and you let me know how many of my competitors can say that. I can name 2, Eazy Care and GMAC. We only have 87 complaints in 4 years on this site, we decline over 600 people a day and average enrolling 125 - 150 customers a day.

In just 4 years thats over 25,000 sales and over 100,000 declines in just the past four years. So out of 125,000 people who have contact with me, 250 complain to the BBB and 87 to Rip off report.com. That is a small percentage, a very small percentage, I count only 10 people on this site complaining about us not paying a claim and 77 people whining about high pressure. Guess what the 25,000 people who have purchased a warranty are in love with are high pressure because are competitors were:

Warranty gold - No pressure out of business

Warranty USA - No insurance company out of business.

One Source Auto Warranty - No pressure out of business.

Platinum Warranty Corporation - No pressure out of business.

E Warranty solutions and Warranty Wizard - no pressure out of business.

Robert, I know you think I am a high pressure boiler room telemarketer, the truth is I have sold warranties since 1991. I know more about this business then you ever will and this is a FACT, " If you choose insurance companies based on their customer friendliness and ease of use, you will get ripped off.

Robert I hope you the best of luck and you probably think I am a scumbag and a liar but I am the most honest salesmen you will ever deal with in your life.

Lonnie, while I admire your stalwart defense of the indefensable -YOU ARE WRONG

Lonnie,

You want to bet that my car has more than 36,000 miles on the clock and is out of factory warranty. Fine How about this for a wager?

If you are correct I will purchase the top of the line warranty from your company for my vehicle and in addittion donate $500 to the charity of your choice.

If you are wrong you will purchase for me the warranty of my choice ( of equal or lesser value) from a competitor and donate $500 to the charity of my choice.

HOW ABOUT PUTTING YOU OR YOUR COMPANIES MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS.

Since I know that you will not respond affirmatively to my offer to avail myself of your offer, I will supply you the same information that I supplied to your staff. TWICE

The car has 11,924 miles on the odometer and is under full factory warranty until August 2008 including oil changes and all reccomended services.

This is confirmed a by carfax report which I ran on the vehicle and which you could have run also since your staff was provided the vehicles VIN number on two seperate occassions.

For you to take umberage at someone ( actually scores of people if you bother to read all the negative comments returned by a Google search of your companies name) refering to your sales technique as a typical boiler room sales operation brings to mind John Gotti , when he was on trial as the head of the NY mafia , standing in front of the Judge and declaring that he was only a plumber trying to earn an honest living.
They both strain credibility to the breaking point.

As for apochryphal smoke and mirrors explanations as to why you conduct buisness the way you do, here is a news flash, your competition does not treat potential customers like preschoolers.

I have received several call backs from warranty companies that I contacted online for price and warranty terms just as I did with your company.

GUESS WHAT!

NO SCRIPT IMMEDIATLY ANSWERED MY QUESTIONS INCLUDING PRICE AND COVERAGE NO PRESSURE TO BUY TODAY E-MAILED ME A COPY OF THE PRICE LIST AND COVERAGE DID NOT CALL BACK 3 TIMES IN 6 HOURS

LONNIE
IF YOUR COMPANY CONDUCTED BUISNESS MORE LIKE YOUR COMPETITION YOU COULD SPEND LESS TIME RESPONDING TO COMMENTS LIKE MINE AND MORE TIME CORRESPONDING WITH SATISFIED CUSTOMERS.

AS TO YOUR KIND REQUEST TO PUT ME ON THE DO NOT CALL LIST
THE CALLS SEEM TO HAVE STOPPED AFTER MY POST. IF THEY START AGAIN YOU WILL BE ON THE LIST OF THOSE THAT I NOTIFY.

Continental Warranty Response

AUTHOR: Lonnie - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, December 18, 2007

Robert,

Please email me the phone number you need removed from the lead database and I will remove it from any phone list my company uses. The email address is lpitts@continentalwarranty.net I will block the number.

As far as us being a boiler room and having a high pressure sales script my response would be I would bet your vehicle had over 36,000 miles, and was out of the factory warranty. Our script (Which the insurance companies regulate) does mention the fact that the lower the risk the lower the cost, and the first time we quote you will be the best price. I find it difficult to imagine that you cannot understand why a company who enrolls used cars like yours wouldn't take certain precautions to avoid insurance fraud.

If anyone reading this feels that questions about my company being a "rip off" because we call people who request information and try to sell them please email me at lpitts@continentalwarranty.net.

Thanks for your inquiry into our product,

Usefulness of extended warranties

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, December 18, 2007

I disagree that extended warranties are a waste of money in all cases. If you are content to restrict your automobile purchases to the sort of vehicles that the previous post describes I would agree that an extended warranty is probably unneccessary.

In point of fact we own several similiar vehicles and would never consider purchasing an extended warranty for them. In fact I do most of the repairs myself.

However, if you are afflicted with a psychosis that manifests itself in an irrational attraction to high end european automobiles - the equation changes.

For example I can purchase an extended warranty on the vehicle I am interested in, from a reputable company, that will extend the coverage by about 2.5 years from the expiration of the factory warranty. This is an exclusionary warranty that is very comprehensive and unlike Continental Warranty, they will send you a copy of the contract, do not harrass you with phone calls ad infinitum and do not require you to purchase immediately and more importantly a google search for complaints does not threaten to overload your computer with the sheer volume of those found.

The cost of this warranty is about $1700. Would I spend even half that amount to get an extended warranty on our Jeep or Dodge Pickup - No - but for a vehicle where an engine replacement can cost $30,000 and a new tranny is $18,000 I consider the certitude of spending $1700 versus the potential of spending much more on one repair to be an acceptable trade off.

IMHO everyone needs to base their decision as the the risk/reward balance of an extended warranty on the potential cost of repairs, the warranty cost and their own financial situation. Just make sure you by an EXCLUSIONARY warranty from a REPUTABLE COMPANY who does'nt have a list of online complaints that if published in book form, would make War and Peace look like a short story.

#1 Consumer Comment

Why on earth would you ever buy a car or truck that needs an extended warranty?

AUTHOR: Thomas - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, December 18, 2007

Why not buy a vehicle deemed reliable so that your risk of it needing repairs is low? Consumer Reports is a good place to start. Visit your public libraries.

I do not buy extended warranties. Most extended warranties cost $1200 and they have a lot of weasel terms and conditions in them. Someone had posted here about having to prove they always changed the oil & filter when specified when they filed a transmission failure claim.

Our 1991 Camry went 270,000 miles before it needed its first repair. Our 2007 Camry V6 has only traveled 7000 miles but everything is fine so far. Toyota's 36K warranty should be good enough. Our 1998 F150 needed two front brake hoses this year but that cost $200.

I think extended warranties are for people who simply cannot handle uncertainty and are willing to pay for false security. Sometimes cars simply need repairs. Paying for repairs as you go is still cheaper than playing the extended-auto-warranty lottery.
