I received a credit card bill for 169.95 from HDI*SIMPLEESCAPES. I called to find out what this bill was for. I was told a membership.

I said oh no I didn't order any membership and the woman would not tell me what the order was for but she would send me written information abou the charge. I called my credit card company and immediatley filed a dispute. At this time the charge has been credited back to Merchants Bank and a dispute has been filed

BEWARE when ordering over the phone

AUTHOR: Jennifer - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 29, 2005

I have seen this scam numerous times. They go by a variety of names such as Simple Escapes, Passport to Fun and more that I cannot think of at the moment. There are two different ways I have seen this scam operate.

1. When you place an order over the phone for something advertised on tv, they will often offer you a deal - usually you get a free gift card (WalMart, Kmart, Sears and Home Depot are the ones I have seen) for trying out a 30 day free membership. You have to call within 30 days to cancel or you will be charged for it. The membership is basically useless, they claim big discounts at a variety of stores and/or restaurants. But you would have to spend a lot of money at these places to get enough of a discount to make it worth the "membership fee."

2. I have gotten lots of these offers in with my credit card statement and also mailed separately from my statement but from the credit card co. They contain a check for anywhere from $3 to $10 - but the catch is that by signing and depositing the check you agree to join this membership savings club.

Once signed up for these clubs it is very difficult to discontinue the membership. The cancellation number is usually busy or not answered.

I fell for this twice, a few years back, and from what I remember, the discount packet I got was for things I would never use (discounts on cruises and vacations, which I could not afford, alarm systems, lots of stuff for homeowners, which I was not) or things that I had to spend lots of money to save anything. Never did get that free WalMart card, either.

Bottom line: if you have anyone offer you something for free - especially if it is a gift card - for trying a RISK FREE membership, RUN!!!

**I'm glad you were able to get your money back. This company counts on those who will just "let it slide" and those who are not too particular about watching their credit card statements-not noticing the monthly charge for months.
