In Dec 2005, my girlfriend got multiple calls from a Reader's Choice Magazine company. Being pregnant, she signed up for 3 magazines involving parenting and children and was told to call within 10 days if she wanted to cancel. They also gave her multiple travel offers. First off, she got the "welcome packet" 3 days later, saying she subscribed to 5 magazines, including ESPN, and let me tell you, neither my g/f or I would bother subscribing to ESPN magazine. It stated she had to make 30 payments of $32.90. By doing the math in my head, that's almost $1000 in magazine subscriptions.

A month later, she came to me upset because her account had an overdraft because of $32.90 missing from the company and said she wanted to cancel. She had not got a single magazine and shown me the welcome packet, so I got a bad feeling and told her to cancel it right away. So she called the company and was told she could not cancel after 10 days. I then called back and asked to talk to the supervisor. He told me there was no possible way to cancel because her subscriptions were already made with the magazine companies. After visiting their website (www.mymagazineservice.com), I called again stating that their website said I could cancel at any time and asked why it would say that if it were not true. The lady didn't answer and said my case would be brought to corporate. I then called corporate and a lady picked up, who asked to speak to my girlfriend. The lady asked why she wanted to cancel and was very persistant to the point were I was saying "just say no" to her and my girlfriend had to eventually say "listen I just found out i'm pregnant so I'm a little broke now". Sje then said I could cancel the membership for a fee of $67, which I agreed upon. Let me tell you, the whole ordeal took atleast 45 minutes to cancel.

It doesn't end there though. Just yesterday, my girlfriend complained yet again of an account overdraft. This time, it was 3 seperate overages from companies she had never delt with. We realized it was the travel companies CRC offered to her and had started memberships with. She was charged 3 seperate payments of $14.95. She called the companies (which she got welcome letters from, not knowing at the time at all what they were from) and asked to cancel. We are going to the bank tomorrow to dispute the 3 charges and get the $45 back ontop of account overage charges. We will then cancel the account for another number to keep from this from happening just incase CRC is giving away her account number. I'm also afraid of my own account since I gave it in for the cancelation.
