We had some friends who had booked a nice cruise on the Queen Mary 2 but could not go or cancel their reservations and asked us if we might like to buy the passage at a rather sizeable discount.

I have never been on a cruise so I decided to check it out.

This is supposed to be Cunard-UK who owned the White Star Line and I imagined Titanic and all of the ships sailing to and from Great Britian that never made it. I have seen two films about the Titanic and still vividly remember the sinking scenes.

I don't think I will be going now after reading what happened to an older Jewish couple on such a cruise in the Oct. 4,2010 edition  of The New York Post.

A wealthy Manhattan couple were forced to walk the plank during a cruise on the Queen Mary 2 after getting into a bizarre fight with a fellow passenger, sources say.

Broadway producer Gloria Sher, 82, and her husband Frederick Evans, 91, said they were ordered off the luxury liner after their obscenity-filled argument with someone they claim made an anti-Semitic remark during a stately black tie dinner.

The couple almost wound up stranded in a remote port in Quebec as punishment for their outburst. At the time they were only a few days into the $20,000 five-day cruise.

They were eventually allowed to remain aboard for six more days after some passengers came to their defense, but they had to stay inside their cabin under house arrest. Even their booze was confiscated.

"I was treated with no respect and unbelievably rude and shockingly terrible,"Sher said."I've been sick every since. It has ruined our lives. It has changed us forever."

Minutes into their meal that day, the couple said, one of their dining companions told Sher to shut up, then added,"There are too many Jews on board."

Sher, who is Jewish, admits she got angry, shooting back,"F**k you!" and "How dare you insult me!" before storming off to her stateroom.

The next morning, the ship's commanding officer,Commodore Bernard Warner knocked on the couple's cabin door.

" You insulted a fellow passenger.I'm going to have to ask you to leave the ship," he said, quoting from a manual.

The couple who met aboard the Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1991  and knew Warner from several trips on the QM2, were  stunned, especially when he insinuated that the 95-pound Sher had pushed someone.

"He told two seniors that we had to get off the ship in Quebec and make our way home," said Sher who produced the Tony-nominated musical "Shenandoah." "We begged him not to do this."

Evans, a former British Navy man, said the Commodore acted more like a modern-day Captain Bligh, refusing to even listen to their side of the story.

But one passenger told The Post that the couple was at least partly to blame.  Sher tends to get belligerent when drinking, the passnger said, recalling that she went on a rant one night because a lounge's piano was closed.

Another passenger, however, felt that the couple was definitely mistreated. Fred Bangasser, a retired Army colonel from Austin,Texas who has befriended them during the cruise, tried to intervene when the commodore was giving them the heave-h*o.

"This is deplorable,"Bangasser said."I felt that they were absolutely treated without appropriate dignity."

Warner allowed them to stay on the ship until their return to New York, but only if they agreed not to leave their room.

The elderly couple spent six days as shut-ins although they did manage to slip out of their suite once in a while.

It was hardly the royal treatment for two people known to make bold claims. Sher, for example, likes to tell people that her husband is the illegitimate son of the Duke of Windsor, the abdicated King Edward VIII, as well as a British knight. Neither claim could be confirmed.

And she has her own colorful past. her former husband, Louis K. Sher, owned a chain of art-house movie theaters, and produced "The Stewardesses," a 1969 3D soft-core porn flick.

The Cunard Cruise Line which would only refund the couple $839-- said in a statement that "Sir Evans and Lady Sher engaged in multiple instances of disrespectful and disruptive behavior towards crew members and guests."

The statement said that Cunard "fully Supported" the Commodore's decision.

Somehow, I don't see Joe, who has complained of being impoverished by various government agencies, going on a luxury cruise.

Ahh....the sweet smell of BS

A rip off because you feared being put off the ship.  What a crock.  So long as you behave yourself on the cruise, which these people apparently could not, you are in no danger of being asked to leave the ship.  Pretty simple huh?

Queen Mary certainly not antisemitic

AUTHOR: Veedub447 - (United States of America)

As a Jew who has traveled on the Queen Mary II I can assure you that the company is in no way anti-semitic. Your fear of being put-off the ship or being treated differently due to your religion is completely unfounded.  By the way, just to set the historical record straight, Cunard lines did not own the Titanic. The Titanic was owned and operated by White Star Lines. The merger of White Star and Cunard occurred some time after the sinking of the Titanic. Today the Cunard name is operated by Princess which is itself owned by Carnival.  There are several Jews on the Board of Directors for Carnival and they certainly would not tolerate antisemitism in any form on any ship they operate.

Ripped Off By My Fears of Being Thrown Off the Ship

AUTHOR: Joe - (U.S.A.)

I always wanted to take a cruise but with this economy, the only surfing I do is the net.

I also like to check and see that I am being read and I am.

The story about the cruise comes direct from The New York Post, a couple of days after the offer was made to me about the tickets. A megachurch minister apparently took advantage of that deal. He is not a Jew.

The Colonel mentioned in this story is a well-known advocate for affirmative action and protecting people's civil rights which is why he stayed in the service so long to defend those right.

There used to be a lot more people participating before Facebook got so huge but
i guess they are all hanging out over there.

I  like the multiple personas I see here concerning the  1  or 2 people who post responses to what I write. And I like seeing the same writing style and the different names the same person uses, but, it's all fun.

in my house, we only have one i phone and one computer that is inter-net capable right now and a lot of people who live here --gets hectic at times.

That reminds me that should we ever have another chance to go on a cruise where those untoward remarks will not be used, I want to make sure it has wi-fi.

There are ways to handle disagreements without using emotional and derogatory terms.

I felt ripped off because I was afraid that if I went, I would not be as rich as these two old people and they would dump me off somewhere  because of my religious belief.

Once you have had a grandparent escape the Shoah and you had a father who was a translator for the U.S. Army when those camps were liberated, it does tend to color your perception.

Why Joe?

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

If it wasn't obvious before Joe from Austin, it is very obvious now that for what ever reason you want to try and hide who ever you are when you are posting sometimes.  Turning off the CAPS LOCK was a nice touch but sorry..it didn't work.  As based on a post to another report that you actually did use your name, it is very obvious that you are posting this one as well.  That is unless there are two people in Austin who had the chance to go on the QE2 because the people that couldn't go were going to give them a huge discount on the tickets.

(You can reference Post #7).

I really don't know why you find it neccessary to post under different names, but quite frankly could care less.  I believe that this is the 3rd or 4th name you have used and only you know the reason why.  Of course no one, short of the EDitor, can stop you from posting here.  But if you are going to post here have the "guts" to at least post it under one name.

Now back to your regularly scheduled reports...

How were you ripped off?

AUTHOR: Eric - (U.S.A.)

How is this a rip-off? You are citing something that happened to someone else whom you dont know and you have yet to explain your own, personal, bad experience with this cruise line. The least you could do was go on the cruise and either update your experience or do us all a favor and never file a rip-off report when you have not been ripped off. I hope the site removes your 'complaint'. Seems you merely want to toot your own horn. Your complaint makes no sense to me.

Contrary to your ROR title, they were NOT in fact put off the boat.  That was apparently threatened but did not happen.

Given the fact the wife is apparently well known for making dubious, and most likely patently false, claims...why should you be concerned?  If the person said what she claims, that is cause to ask to be moved to another table.  Not go off on a tirade.  Given the fact their alcohol was confiscated, it sounds more likely that they were not handling it too well. Another unbelievable part is about their being confined to quarters.  If someone is confined to quarters for behavior, on most cruise lines, a guard is placed to ensure they don't "slip out."  Had they been caught after slipping out, the Commodore would have been well within his rights to put them off at the next port. Plus the NY Post is about as believable a news organization as the Enquirer these days.

As long as you behave yourself, there is no reason to fear taking the cruise.
