I am writing in order to report a very unfortante incident regarding David Thompson Resort (aka. DTR) when I worked there a few summers ago. I worked for them as a temporary worker for about two weeks near the end of their summer season. I left a higher paying seasonal job to work for them because I thought it would a happier work environment for me personally because I had friends who worked for them. David Thompson Resort was also understaffed in one of their departments and i agreed to help out.

Initially, over the phone I was told I would not have to pay room and board. This was a concern for me, so I made sure I asked about it. Most employees staying for the duration of the summer season are charged room and board (they are housed and staff accomidations and fed all meals). The owner, Ron told me that he WOULD NOT charge me for room and board becuase I would be working for them for such a short time. He assured me that it would not be taken off my pay and to not worry.

As soon as I arrived, I began working, then filled out a form for my direct deposit. It included my ADDRESS and banking information. I also started logging in my work hours in a sign in booklet. The office only has a sign in booklet to record your hours and there is no clock in system to record your hours, that most employers have. 

Before arriving I was cautioned by a few of the employees that Ron often finds excuses not to pay people properly and has threatened to "dock your pay" ( as in pay less than what the employee is entitled to) for unjustified reasons. I was told that he once threatened an employee to "dock their pay" for being late on one day. Being late once is not valid nor legal reason not pay an employee. Despite the countless stories I heard about Ron and David Thompson Resort, I decided to work for them anyway. BIG MISTAKE.

Once I was done working for them I went on a trip with 2 of the girls who also worked for DTR. When the day came to expect our payment for work, I checked my bank account and I had not been paid by DTR. I asked my friends and they all assured me that they had been paid. I started to worry, but they told me to just call the office and speak to Ron. I called immediately and informed Ron that I had not been paid. I told him I had signed up for Direct Deposit and that there was no direct deposit. He said " Oh, we couldn't process your direct deposit because you didn't fill in your address."

I have a good memory and I remember specifically filling out my ADDRESS. Also, in order to process a direct deposit you only need the individua's bank account information. I didn't realize at the time, but it seemed as if he was trying to find a way not to pay me my wages! I told him I could give him my address right now over the phone and asked if he could process my direct deposit. He then insisted on not doing this and mailing me a check. I kept thinking in my head "why?" when he could just process the direct deposit.... Again, I now realize he was trying to find away to rip me off. And it worked...

He told me "Well, what if I just mail you a check. I'll just mail you a check and I won't take taxes off alright. I'll do that for you alright?" It is illegal to pay an employee under the table and to not take taxes off. I am an honest person and I really did not want him to do this. I tried to push for my direct deposit but he insisted on sending me this check. I had a bad feeling about it, but I felt almost pressured and I was actually worried that if I didn't agree to it, I would never get paid. Thus, I agreed for me to send me this check.

Two weeks later I arrived home after my trip to find a check from David Thompson Resort for literally HALF the amount of my hours worked before taxes. Trust me. I calculated it to the tea. I feel as if even if taxes WHERE taken out I would have been paid more than what he was paying me! 

I called the office and asked if he could double check my hours. He siad sure he'll check them later and that he feels everything was done right. He said "It seems about right." WRONG! So wrong! He was way off. I gave him some time to look over things and I called back a month later. More than enough time for him.

Again, he told me that everything seemed about right. It wasen't. I asked him to look over my hours again if he could, and then he said they shipped all the booklets of written down hours away to calcualte taxes for tax season. At this point I had a feeling he would just never pay me what he owed me. I then asked if I could at LEAST have a record of employment. He then said "Well, I can't give you that because I didn't take taxes off right?" He got me right where he wanted me. Helpless.

In Canada, every employer is reqquired BY LAW to give a record of employment to their employees. 

Now go through this logic with me. He said that the booklets of written down hours where put away and being shipped of to calcualte taxes for tax season. Do you hear this? If I didn't get taxes taken off my check and was being paid under the table, then why would MY hours be sent off? At the time I didn't realize it, but I was probably being lied to. None of what he was telling me made any sense.

If you are considering working for David Thompson Resort, I strongly suggest that you DO NOT. I was treated unfairly and I was very hurt, distressed and insulted. What the owner did to me was UNACCEPTABLE.

I have wanted to go to the labor board to report his actions, but I was told by other DTR employees that others HAVE gone to the labor board and that the owner "knows how to talk to them." Many of the people that work for David Thompson Resort come in for the summer from the other side of the country on almost a "wroking holiday" type situation. In fact, DTR puts a great amount of effort to specifically employee people from very far away. It is my feeling that the owners take advantage of the fact that many of their workers are far from home. They are pretty much stuck there for the summer.
