I stayed at a Days Inn in Huntington, West Virginia. I payed with cash. They required a $400 deposit on the room to stay for one night. The next morning when I went to check out, I did not recieve a printed reciept for the deposit at check out, only for the room. After about 20 min. of waiting in the lobby, the "housekeeping manager" called the front dest and said that I could not have my deposit (400 dollars) back because there were ciggerette burns on the jacuzzi. As soon as I walked in the room when I first got there I went and looked at the jacuzzi, and noticed the burns there. There is no way that I put those burns there. They were just waiting for an unsuspecting young and naive person to walk in with a cash deposit. Then after calling the corporate office of Days Inn, they said that there was nothing they could do because that Days Inn was privatly owned. So, I called the owner of that Days Inn and she made up lies that the lobby had to call my room 3 times that night because of the noise and there were broken beer bottles in there... which of course is a TOTAL lie!!! So, the summary of my story is that Days Inn legally stole 400 dollars from me and got away with it. My advice to everyone.... DO NOT STAY AT A DAYS INN, EVER FOR ANY REASON. PLEASE!

$400.00 Is not out of line, ..I have worked in the hotel business for over 20 years and it is common practice in large cities ( I worked in NYC, Chicago, Key West, Washington DC, Pittsburgh, Nashville among others) to require a cash deposit of one to two nights room charge if the person does not have a credit card. For example if your room was 200.00 a night they may require the charge up front plus $400.00 deposit.
Once in Chicago I had a gentleman from China say he wanted to call China. I made him leave a $500.00 cash deposit before I turned the phone on. Once that phone is on you have no control over it.

When you are checking into a hotel... any kind of hotel, an individual is expected to leave a deposit for "incidental" charges only. For phone calls, room service orders, etc. Most hotels will request a minimal deposit, most times on a credit card. Should you not have a credit card, and intend to pay in cash, you should not need to put up more than $20-50 per night. If a hotel is asking for more, something is fishy. Look elsewhere.
