As I think about this, I want to throw up!! To begin with my husband and I went to look for an economical vehicle. We stopped at several places and finally stopped in at Desert Nissan in Las Vegas. The selection was pretty good. The salesman, Alvin, was a bit pushy but that was okay. The thing that started to bother me was one of the first questions he asked was how large our family was and if we could make a large enough down payment. The down payment part I could understand, but how large our family was??

At any rate, we allowed him to show us a couple of cars and some trucks. Our credit is not the greatest and we let him know right up front. His words to us were "Not a problem, we work with everyone and you will drive out of here with a vehicle!" Cool!! Everything sounded okay. We found a good deal on a truck and went inside to see about paperwork and all that stuff!

We got inside and were asked to have a seat at a table. We were left alone for about 5 minutes and Alvin came back with some papers. We filled them out and away he went again. This time they were checking our credit. Good deal!! We told him our credit was not good and we couldn't afford to put down a large amount of money. This time we were left alone for about 20 minutes. Then Alvin came back and told us we could look at a different selection of cheaper cars and trucks. So out the door we went with Alvin telling us he had this wonderful truck in mind.

The truck was a low rider without the hydraulics. I flat out told him NOT even!!! He then went back in to talk to someone and decided that the truck we originally looked at might be okay. We went back inside, took our seats, and waited for Alvin to come back. He brought along his manager, Randy, to the table with him. Randy told us that we would have to come up with $1100 for the down payment and the truck was ours.

We had $500 and signed an agreement that we would be in by the end of that week to deliver $600 more. We drove away in a Chevy S-10.

We delivered the additional money on time and signed all the rest of the necessary documents. This money was our kids' Christmas money. We told him this and were assured that we would be financed. About a week later, the truck started having front-end problems and we took it in. They allowed us to trade the truck on another one. This one was a Ford Ranger. Then a few days after that, we get a call from the finance guy, Tim.

Tim told us that we had to come up with more of a down payment or get a co-signer and the documents would be finalized. We asked my husband's mother if she would co-sign for us and she agreed. When we went down to pick up the paperwork from Desert Nissan (after they ran my mother-in-laws credit, of course), we noticed that they had put her on as Buyer not co-signer. When we questioned them about this, they said that it wasn't the final paperwork and on the final, we would be the buyer and she would be co-signer.

My mother-in-law refused to sign on the buyer line and signed instead on the co-signer line. That seemed fair since we were buying the truck and not her!! When we took the papers in, Tim became annoyed that she signed on the wrong line and we did a conference call to her. Tim told her that he would draw up new papers for her to sign on the co-signers line and then the deal would be done. So away we went with new papers in hand.

About 2 days later, we receive a call to come in and sign the papers. With my husbands work schedule, we had to wait until the weekend. They didn't seem to have a problem with that, at first!!! When we got down to Desert Nissan to sign the papers, we were ushered into Tim's office and told to have a seat. Tim is the finance manager, remember, and supposedly a professional. He told us that our credit was no good (which we told them up front, in the beginning), and that because my mother-in-law wouldn't sign on the buyers line, we had to turn in the truck. We demanded our $1100 back to go find another car and were told NO!! We were told that we were leaches, we were trash, and he asked what kind of people we thought we were!! He told my husband that he (Tim) was going to kick my husbands a*s and to get the F*** out of his office and off their property RIGHT NOW!!! Tim mentioned getting the law involved and have us sued!! FOR WHAT?? Trying to buy a truck??

We left and were on foot 70 miles from our home. To this day we have not received our down payment but still get letters from Alvin saying how glad he is we bought the Chevy S-10.

The moral of this story: Stay away from Desert Nissan. They promise the monn and deliver nothing!!

The dealer reneged on the deal

AUTHOR: Tom - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, March 08, 2005

The dealer reneged on the deal. The deal was off. All Kym wanted now was the down payment that the dealer kept illegally. There was no deal. I would like to hear if Kym ever got her $1,100 back.

Learn from my Great Experience at Desert Nissan

AUTHOR: Michelle - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, March 08, 2005

I am sorry to hear your experience at Desert Nissan was not as favorable as mine.

Within the last 10 years I have purchased 6 cars. 2 were leases (which I will never do again.) and 1 was totaled, 1 traded in, and 2 I have in my possession at this time.

There are things to keep in mind when you purchase a car from ANY dealer.

#1: Know what you want BEFORE you go, or look at a few lots on a Sunday (when they are closed and you can not be hassled) - jot down the vehicles they have, and then research. Know the value BEFORE you go too. You cannot only negotiate payments and interest, but you can also negotiate the COST of the car, NEW OR USED!!! Kelley Blue Book has a great website that is very easy to navigate through. Keep in mind the car depreciates the second you drive it off the lot.... so the better you negotiate, the less you will be upside down.

#2: Interest Rates - The higher the interest rate, the higher the payment. Never pay an interest rate that ends up costing you more in interest than the value of the car, once all is said and done. Haggle for the rate.

#3: Never give in on what you can truly AFFORD to pay monthly. On my first car, I was so suckered in; I couldn't even enjoy the vehicle because I truly could not afford it. Make sure you can afford the payment. If they act like they can't help, walk out. 99% of the time, they'll call you right back...

#4: Be careful with your down payment. If at all possible, (a few places allow this) ask to break up the entire down into payments, so that nothing is given to them to deposit immediately. That way if the deal falls through, you have not given them anything. If they insist - verify their policy before hand, and ask for it in writing. And give them as little as possible, ($100.00).

#5: Never Ever take the first offer from the finance. 53% of consumers jump on the offer thinking this is the best they can get. The dealership takes those 53% to the bank. Don't be one of them. Haggle, and keep haggling until you get what you want!!

#6: Go with plenty of time. The normal buying process can take up to 4 hours, if you consider financing, paperwork, warranty sales, etc. Make sure you are not rushed. Sometimes we can jump on an offer because we just want to get out of there.

#7: Women... I know we are all proud and don't need "their help" etc... but, TAKE A MAN if possible... Or take a outspoken friend. If they feel you aren't going to take any crap, then it gives them less area to move. Men, sales or not, prey on women, and have a harder time doing so on their male peers.

#8: Free Stuff... Many places will throw in , Free Tint, Free Stereo upgrades, free warranties... you just have to ask, or in some cases demand. For instance... " We want an additional 500.00 down, the dealer says. Then you say, "Okay, but I want my car tinted for free, and throw in the extended warranty."
~~~
My last sale at Desert Nissan was fabulous. I am usually the one who bends. But my husband will walk out in a second. His last walk out saved me $150.00 a month, got my $12,000 deficit on my Intrepid paid off in full, and into a brand new truck with an extended warranty for free. We have learned so much from all the deals we make. But one thing for sure.... Watch your interest rates, and your months to pay... yeah a 72 month loan sounds good because it drops the payment... but over time, you could get tired of your car. A vehicle purchased over a longer loan term, will stay upside down much longer than one over a shorter term. Sometimes it is worth paying $50.00 a month more to save a year.
OH YEAH - don't believe them when they say you can Refinance in a year for a lower payment, or get a different car. They say that to get you in to a car then and there, and when you come back, they look at you like you are crazy and want $5000.00 down. I have been here in this before!! Get what you like the first time, or wait until you can.
