While on vacation, I was looking at a team jersey for my son at d**k's on Highway 36 in West Long Branch , NJ. While looking, I was approached by a d**k's associate, Christopher, who said if I purchased the jersey using a d**k's credit card , I would recieve a $40 rebate. This took place on July 29, 2019.

I completed the application electronically at the store but was told they couldn't complete the process and was asked to pay with a personal credit card. I was told by Christopeher that I would receive a rebate once the credit application was processed. I completed the purchase on my personal VISA card.

Some time later, I received a letter dated August 2, 2019 saying that my application was denied for the following reasons:

1. Too few bankcard accounts.

2.Days since most recent inquiry is too short.

3.Number of inquiries.

4. Limited credit history.

I have a 40 plus year history of excellent credit history and a current FICO score in excess of 800. In addition, I was provided a card from the same bank, Synchrony Bank, less than 90 days ago.

I feel that I was enticed to make the purchase by a d**k's employee and there was never any intention to provide the rebate. You'll notice the reasons listed for rejecting my application do not mention a poor credit or poor payment history.

Before reaching out on this website I contatced d**k's directly. The first time on August 19, a representative took my personal and contact information and said someopne would contact me by August 23. I never heard from them and contacted the customer service number on their website on August 30. I spoke with a gentleman named Jose' and was told I'd have to speak to the store; more run around from d**k's.

No one here who comments works for the Sporting Goods store.  You just received a response you didn't like, and I personally agree with the respondent..

Now, all of the reasons you stated as the reasons you were denied would not only apply at this store, but pretty much anywhere.  Too few cards means you're recent credit history is insufficient.  Days since last inquiry means you appear to be wanting to obtain credit, which is fine, but too much too soon is no good either.  Number of inquiries seems obvious.

Limited credit history is closely related to the first.  The fact you believe you have a FICO score of 800 (likely not a FICO score, but a score provided by one of the other 3 agencies since you have to pay money to Fair Isaac Corporation get a FICO score) doesn't mean you are automatically entitled to credit.  The fact you have a score that high seems to indicate you aren't late with payments, but again the denial of credit has nothing to do with your history of on-time payments.

Now if I were the Sporting Goods store, I would have honored the rebate regardless of whether you were able to obtain credit or not; I don't like the idea of a store going back on a rebate simply because the customer didn't qualify for credit.  If the store is willing to offer a rebate, let it do so through the use of credit card - i.e. a 1%-3% rebate on purchases in their stores, provided the customer pays the balance each month.  You may certainly choose not to do business with that store, however with the closing of many sporting goods stores, your choices are certainly dwindling...

I also think it's hilarious the site censors Dicks....just saying...

Nice to see that d**k's keeps customer satisfaction at the forefront. Why bother to gather the facts when you can make the customer the bad guy. All of the assumptions and suppositions in the reply regarding my credit are incorrect; would have been nice of you to check before you replied. I contacted d**k's to get the facts behind their decision but they didn't show any desire to satisfy a legitimate customer inquiry; no reply to the first inquiry and a complete passing of the buck to my second inquiry.

Congratulations, you have won the battle but lost me as a customer.  Lousy customer service and the internet will send you to the retail graveyard like so many before you. Have a nice trip.

I feel that I was enticed to make the purchase by a d**k's employee and there was never any intention to provide the rebate.
- Nothing you have shown, shows that there was never any intention. The rebate was contingent on you getting approved for the card, which you were not. You would have to show that not one person that applied was approved.

You'll notice the reasons listed for rejecting my application do not mention a poor credit or poor payment history.
- "Poor Credit" is a very generic term. You could have a perfect payment history, but if your cards are "Maxed Out" your credit could still be considered poor.

Now, based on your statement that you just got a card from them for another company less than 90 days ago, pretty much shows why you were declined.  As their reason 2 stated "Days since most recent inquiry is too short" and reason 3 stated "Number of Inquiries".  The fact that you are applying for another card within 90 days is a big red flag to creditors.  As (regardless of what you feel) creditors feel that this is a higher risk that you are running up too much credit in too short of a time. Had it been a year, or even 6 months ago it is likely with eveything else being equal you would have been approved. Yes to some creditors more than 1 inquiry every few months is too many. But again this is THEIR money that they are deciding if they are willing to take a risk on you, and in this case they decided not to.
