I purchased an item for Christmas gift. Coat was to large and I returned it to store. I paid with my debit card.... so this was immediately taken out of my cking account. After I returned the item the cashier gave me a credit slip showing the credit to my cking account. They have still not put the nearly 300.00 back into my account today. This is now the day 4....

Why do they have use my money for several days when they immediately took the money out of my account? I do not think this is fair or ethical.

I will never use my debit card at this business again.

This is a sneaky common practice

The explanation that the banks are to blame is not true.  I purchased a dishwasher for $1400 from Sears last Thursday and cancelled the order before I even left the store.  I used my debit card for the purchase and to cancel the order.  I never even took possession of the item.  Of course, the money came out of my account the moment I made the purchase and guess what?  HERE IT IS 4 DAYS LATER AND THEY STILL HAVEN'T CREDITED MY CHECKING ACCOUNT.  I called Chase and they said there isn't even anything "pending" from Sears. I called Sears corporate headquarters and they said they couldn't do anything and to call the store manager.  I called him and he said "it sometimes takes days to process a credit." 

Why?  There is absolutely no valid reason he could give me other than "that's just the way it is."  So they get the use of my $1400 for days. . . and I have the potential of bouncing dozens of checks because of this unethical practice.  This practice should be investigated and a law should be passed to stop this practice.

Bottom line, in this day and age, if they can take money out of your account instantly, then can just as easily put it back in, but they have figured out a way to get a free loan from the "float." 

I will never shop at Sears again.

Dillard's Is Not To Blame For Delays In Money Transfers

The people to blame for your monies not being returned to you in a "reasonable" time frame are the banking institute and the credit card systems involved...not Dillard's.

Why would Dillard's "hold" onto your money for 4 days? They (and any other retailer) would want you to have access to that money immediatly, so you would be able to spend it at their establishment.

If you returned the merchandise on the 26th of December, your banking institute would not even have gotten that request/transaction until the 27th (most banks weren't open, nor did they process any transactions on the 26th). And at that point, a refund can take anywhere from 48-72 hours to process through the bank...usually, the larger the refund, the longer it takes.

If the monies do not appear in your account within 5 working days (and because of the new year, the 5th working day after the 26th would actually be January 3, so you would need to wait until the 4th before you did anything), and your banking institute has no record of such a transaction going through, then you need to bring your reciept back to the store and have them re-ring the transaction...again, you must consider the new year and realize that most banking institutes are not open on Monday January 2.

Again, the problem you had with your refund is NOT part of a Dillard's conspiracy to hold onto your money...it's just a typical delay with money transfers caused by the overwhelming number of transactions being processed throughout the holiday season...

So according to your logic then, you should be blaming Santa Clause not Dillard's.
