During the second month of my service with DIRCTV I received an unsolicited sales call from a DIRECTV sales rep offering to upgrade my existing "Entertainment" package to "Choice" package for only $9 a month and extend my free premium channels for three months.

I asked her several times to confirm this amount and the lady repeated and confirmed this amount every time so I finally agreed because the "Choice" package included the Science Channel which I like to watch...

My first two bills were $24.99 and that was the amount that I was supposed to pay for the first three months and than the bill was supposed to go up by approximately $10 so additional $9 for several more channels. My next bill was a shocker, it did not go up by $9, $19 or even $29, it went up the whole $45.91.

Since I was enrolled in auto-pay they already charged my credit card $70.90 and it was clearly the well known tactics where they try to charge you obscene amounts knowing you're on auto-pay so if you don't notice they just keep on charging you this crazy amount and if you do notice and call they immediately apologize and offer to "fix the problem"... in other words "if it goes, it goes" tactics.

Furious, I called them immediately and sure enough they offered to "fix the problem" but the real problem was that they were being dishonest and tried to defraud me and once the company tries to do that I no longer wish to have any kind of relationship with that company and immediately close all my accounts, determined not to send any more business their way.

Anyway, after I refused to accept the "fix" and requested to cancel the account immediately they informed me that they will be charging me $20 for each month of "service" I was projected to have with their company over the 24 month "agreement" which came out to totally obscene $420.

I pointed out that:

  1. The dish was already installed so their cost of establishing the service was much smaller than typical.

  2. When you clearly attempt to defraud someone you can no longer have an "agreement" with that consumer...

This obviously meant nothing to their CSR and her supervisor so they sent me the bill for the full amount they think I owed them under the "agreement".

I will try to contact some higher ranking officials in the company and if I do not get a satisfactory reply I will try the small claims court.

In short, this company is highly unethical, they will try to defraud you so stay as far away as you can.
