Looking to maintain budget and needing a computer, I bought online a refurbished HP; received quickly, no OS so I installed winXP: found out there are no techs that know anything on staff; they are strictly a warehouse. Downloaded everything available and still no sound, no video, no ethernet, completely useless. Their "tech" is a young girl who answers in emails in sarcastic tones with useless information. The best one was "call HP and see what they recommend". After paying an additional $49 for warranty, HP said, "we can't answer any tech questions, your PC has been out of warranty for the last 8 months". So, after costing me $80 in shipping costs, I still have no computer. Lesson learned: Need a cheap computer?? Go over to walmart.

Generic Windows OS vs preinstalled OS

AUTHOR: saffire045 - (United States of America)

POSTED: Sunday, March 10, 2013

The same thing happened to me at another online store but the tech help was much better.  Even after installing a Windows Operating System on a computer with a blank hard drive there will be no drivers for the internet (AKA ethernet), video, audio, media graphics (AKA chipset) and USB drivers because they are hardware items unique to the computer.  The tech emailed the links to me for the drivers and directions.  They were at the IBM website.

You can find out what hardware is installed on your unit by clicking: start/ control panel/system/hardware/device manager and clicking on the + signs to see what hardware is installed.  Then you can go to the manufacturers website and download the drivers.  For me it meant a trip to the library with my USB memory stick because I had no internet service.  Occasionally the refurbishing store will replace a failing component with a similar one and the driver might not be easily found.

If you're not familiar with the device manager it might help to do some research to find out more about it before you attempt this.  For me it took a few calls to the company until I found a tech that was knowledgeable so if you make the effort, this is an issue that can be resolved.

Discount PC Rocks!

AUTHOR: TNTechie - (United States of America)

POSTED: Monday, March 29, 2010

Over the past three years, I have purchased several computers from Discount PC.  I was directed to them by an associate of mine, who has also purchased several computers from them.

Over the years, every computer I have purchased has been EXACTLY as it was advertised to be.  Every single component which Discount PC listed on the page for the given model was included and worked properly.  Every system worked within the specifications provided by Discount PC.

It should be noted that Discount PC not only sells refurbished PCs and laptops, they also provide upgrades on various models, for an additional charge.  If there was to be an issue with a unit they sell, they should be easily capable of correcting that issue.

The complaint notes that the PC arrived without an operating system.  Discount PC does sell units like this.  If an OS is included, it is clearly noted.  If the unit is sold without an OS, this is also clearly noted.  Sometimes, Discount PC may have similar items on their website, a few of which might not include an OS.  It is the responsibility of the buyer to make sure they are adding the right one to their cart.  Furthermore, Discount PC also offers a return period on all of the units they sell.  If the computer is not as expected, it can easily be returned to them for a refund.

As to the issue of not having sound, video, or ethernet, it should be noted that what drivers weren't included generically with Windows XP are easily downloadable from Intel or from the manufacturer of the components.  An excellent source is to Google the specific model information for your computer.  More often than not, you will get a hit to a page on the computer maker's site for that unit which will include specs and driver downloads.    I know this from experience, as I have refurbished a number of computers in my 20+ years of working on computers.

If someone comes to me looking for a recommendation on a Windows XP based computer at a reasonable price, the FIRST place I suggest is Discount PC.  Pick a computer, add in your upgrades, and you're ready to go.

discount pc who they really are

AUTHOR: Gertie13 - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, May 21, 2008

discount pc international was started by mike wright in 1993. mike is the son of earl wright who runs amg guarantee trust based out of colorado. basically mike started this business out of his house and then expanded to his current location. he has a masters of business and very little computer experience. he hires, buys or woos his people from other tech companies. i know he did it repeatedly to my husband in michigan. he was always losing tech people to him in colorado. hard to compete with the visions of the rockies flashing in your head!

the parent corporation is global link technologies also based out of littleton.
thats the background of the company. global link technologies is probably a small umbrella corporation of dads much bigger corporation which is amg national trust bank (now) that company invests the money of the wealthy-kind of a warren buffet scenario.

at one time they had a great service dept. how do i know? my husband started up the service dept and then eventually started discount stores in michigan. that ended with his suicide in 2002.

if you are dissatisfied with your service i would contact mike wright and ask him to stand behind his product. if you google global link technologies you will find the number based out of littleton colorado.
