Last Thanksgiving I went to visit my family in Florida, and somehow I ended up not paying a number of 25 cent tolls, I remember in 2 occasions when I was on the highway, there was a  toll ahead and no way to exit, but other than that, I dont remember not paying tolls.  About a month later, I get a bill for 12 tolls at 25 cents each plus $25 dollar charge per toll so a total of $303 dollars charged to my account by Dollar Rent-A-Car.

I called dollar and they refused to refund my money, claiming it was entirely my fault, that they are not responsible for tolls.

If the toll is such a big problem in Florida, Dollar must make the toll paying machine standard equipment in their vehicles. Even me, who has been to Florida before, was completely shocked that the toll situation has become such a problem in Florida.  Consider a tourist from Europe that has no clue how tolls work here, they will get raped by Dollar.

I am disputing this with my credit card. But, I will NEVER, EVER rent from Dollar/Hertz again.

Comment to Response "How Did You Not See the Toll Signs

AUTHOR: Beth - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, April 05, 2012

I think the person who responded to the person making the complaint missed the point.  It isn't about whether the person saw or did not see signs about toll roads in Fort Lauderdale-Miama area, but how Dollar practices result in the agency getting tons of undeserved money from unsuspecting tourists.

We just had a similar experience in March 2012 at Dollar, Fort Lauderdale airport.  We flew there for a cruise and rented a car to do some sightseeing before the cruise.  Doesn't Floria like tourists to bring their dollars to the area?

We did see toll signs and saw nothing to do but go on, figuring it would work as it does in Texas, the license plate would be billed (Dollar Rental) and they would pass on the charge to us plus an administrative fee.   No problem right?  Well there is a problem.  We were not given any information at the rental desk regarding how toll roads would work, how you could get or avoid a violation with Dollar, if we should pay something extra to avoid violations if we used a cash-less one, etc.  And then I have read that if you incur a toll, Dollar will charge you the toll plus a $25 violation fee plus for each toll use.   Excuse me.......when we were never told anything about it or how to avoid it?  I think this is about to happen to me because I have a Dollar charge pending on my card, close to a month later, for $51 but have not received any info from Dollar about it.  I have written them to try and find out if this about tolls.  We drove from Fort Lauderdale to Miami, through to Little Havana to eat, and then back to Fort Lauderdale.  For the trip back, we did pass a toll booth and paid the cash toll.  That was our only use of tolls.

How did you not notice the tolls?

In the West Palm Beach area there are huge entry signs for Fl's Turnpike, which is the only toll road in the area. You have to pass through a toll booth area with a huge sign overhead showing that it is a toll road. Some of the toll booths are manned, some are not, but they are all marked with huge signs. There are signs all along the toll road indicating extra charges if you pass a particular exit beyond which you have paid. To say that you missed the toll booth plus the signs overhead plus the exit signs is a pretty outrageous statement.

If you actually missed those signs, maybe you need to check your eyesight before you drive again. If your eyesight is ok, then the next time you come you might want to take any other road here as we only have one toll road, all the other roadways are free.
