I am 69, a senior on social security.  I travel infrequently but when I do look for travel deals. Dollar advertised with a travel deal package with Cheaptickets.com that appeared attractive to allow me to visit my 90 year old aunt in Tampa with my sister.  I had done this before with other car rental companies on previous trips to visit Tampa and was NEVER treated this way as Dollar treated me. I am a current resident of Pennsylvania and cannot affford to s****.>

I booked the deal and arrived at the Tampa airport on time and secured the rental agreement.  I  opted out of insurance as I am covered by State Farm and have an excellent driving record.  I opted out of the toll pass as I have no debts and pay all my bills promptly and have a solid gold credit rating.  [I am the kind of customer Dollar should want for repeat visits.] My sister and I carred $30 in coin and cash and paid all tolls to Brookesville and back to Tampa and for a visit to a friend up North.  We are responsible citizens.  I returned the car in perfect conditon filled to the nines with gas and met all my responsibilities.  The transaction was October 28 - October 31.

After the trip was paid and finished (or so I thought) I received two invoices in the mail from www. dollarerentalfine.com reference nos. 10235502 for an additional $64.50 and no. 10226503 for an additional $32.12 from Scottsdale, AZ at the Dollar Processing Services, P.O. Box 113270 05 stating that I had incurred tolls at Anderson and Main and Sugarwood and Main for each $1.06 but demanding a total of $90.00 in "administrative fees" based on a clause in their liability agreement that the consumer agrees to pay for administrative fees for unpaid tolls.

Opt out is a scam to collect additonal fees by credit card weeks later by covering their a** with their clause. $60 admin fees on $4.50 of so called hidden tolls is excessive. Tampa Florida location CEO in Tulsa

The fact of the matter is that apart from their agreement to cover themselves with their liability agreement they are participating in a SCAM.  Due to the location of their service it is evident that the toll pass for $40 is not posible to be an "opt out".  One MUST purchase the toll pass; but the consumer is not informed of the hidden electronic tolls nor that the opt out is a necessity.  The consumer is led to believe we can opt out and then socked with excessive "admin fees" tacked on to the credit card after the fact; covered by the carriers liability clause.

This practice is probably netting Dollar milliions of dollars a year and allows them to advertise themselves as a low cost carrier, hitting the consumer in the pocket after the trip with hidden and costly and excessive fees.  If they were an honest carrier and reputable; they would not charge $60 -$90.00 for $4.50 in hidden Florida tolls for which there are  no booths to pay, no sign notifications and for which Dollar neglects to inform the consumer at the desk when the rental agreement is being purchased despite the liability clause to cover themselves with this shameful practice.  It appears their is a huge business behind collecting these excessive fees.

I would never return as a customer to Dollar Rental as this practice is corrupt despite their artfully constructed liability clause.  They should do the right thing which is to inform the consumer of the necessity of the $40 pass or include it in the rental agreement but this would raise the fee on their tight competitive margins so they hide it and hit the consumer with it behind the scenes.  It is a disgusting practice and they should be made to live up to truth in advertising and conduct themselves with better business ethics. I tried to straighten this out on several occasions and have hit nothing but unacceptible red tape and they are intent to hit my credit card with thse bogus adminstrative fees for $4.50 in hidden tolls.  Shame on them!

Sincerely,

Doris Rudnick,

Effort, pa

I am from NY and it was my first time visiting tampa. With our tolls you pay cash or go through easy pass but you always have an option so I did not pay for the pass I thought I'll go through and pay cash. I was wrong no one told me there were plate tolls I had no idea until I went through them and it said $1.25 I'm like ok didn't realize 5gere was a $15 charge on top of the $1.25 until I got my bill I was so mad but next time I know better I just paid it and know to purchase it next time. It definitely sucks that they don't explain how the tolls work down there but why would they they are making so much money off out of town people like us!! Another company not thinking of their customers I will not be renting with them again just because of this stunt

I'm not "brain dead" Jim, here's the deal hypothetically Dollar gets; (I just used  my $1.59 Walmart calculator.)

17,552,707 passengers pass through Tampa airport each year according to their website.  If Dollar rents to only 10% of that number lets say for illustration purposes 1,755,270 people each year and of those lets say as they are a low end budget oriented franchise; that say only 65% choose the opt out of the Tampa Sunpass. For the 1.00 electronic toll that one cannot see, feel, read about or taste to know it is there to pay, one would be billed $60.00 plus the toll after your trip was long completed.  Hypothetically, that would result in windfall revenues to Dollar rental of approximately $6,845,530 each year billing these usary type fees as add ons to your credit card.  It does not take a JD from Harvard to see this is unethical and a scam!   All it takes Jim is half an ounce of connecting a few cororate greed dots and a $1.59 calculator from Walmart; so kiss my grits!!

To the reader: calculate the cost of Sun Pass as an obligatory fee in your Dollar Rental on top of the advertised cut-rate deal they tell you they are giving you and you will quickly see how competitive they really are.  Not much truth in advertising these days.  Opt out of Sun Pass and automatically add at least another  $60 - $90 bucks onto the deal they are giving you up front  because sure as shootin they are coming to get your credit card for their annuity payment.

To Dollar: Dont send out the possi boys, Jim was an amateur but you dont stand on firm ground.  USA is getting tired of the corruption on all levels especially us seniors. We have seen our interest rates stolen by the banks, our pensions destroyed by the corporations and we get 'humped' from every direction all under the guise of the small print and legalize.  Its time to expose it all for what it is!  Greed boys, just plain greed.  Thanks Jim for the repartee; its been fun.

Avoid Dollar rental like the plague. I know I will.

Dollar Employee Rebuttal here??

The only "high horse" is your two legged butt..its a horses behind dear friend...

Its not about the 'liability clause'; reading it or NOT reading it;  its about the SET UP.  Admin fees that are exhorbitant and a system of customber service that is bogus and a legal counsel that covers their scam nad it is a SCAM.

In the ame way that Dollar does not know  every hidden electronic station on the Florida system and fails to indcate that they exist to the out of town and out of state travellor and insists to GUAGE for hidden fees..is the same way I have the right to speak up and notify other consumers that this unethical practice goes on.  You  notice I did not say illegal..no it is not illegal to parce the law to favor your own pocket book especially when you can charge $30 bucks  clip for a hidden toll of 1.00 and do it muliple times.

I will let the reader be the judge of  whose  horse is  more arrogant and higher!

Why do you defend this practice anyway do you have a horse in the race?? speaking of horses!!

It's Time To Get Off The High Horse!

Why is it I was able to find all the toll policy information on their website in less than 45 seconds? Did you even bother to read the contract or did you just sign without knowing what you were obligating yourself to? Did you actually think you are ENTITLED to use their car and their registration to avoid paying tolls? Bottom line here is YOU didn't even bother to read the agreement you signed! Otherwise, you would have seen the toll policy! It's not THEIR FAULT you failed to be a smart consumer! No scam here!!! Let me save you the effort...don't bother with the immature, brainless response of "you must work for them" because you just can't stand it when the nail is hit directly on the head. I don't work for them!!!!!
