What this company is doing is getting hold (somehow...) of info on Domains registered with other companies (even guaranteed ones) and sending letters saying we need to send them (Domain Renewal Group) money to keep our name. This is not the case. It is, as I say in my title an attempt to get money for nothing...! I am told by my host that it is legal. Weird laws we have. How did they acquire information on me...? If you get anything in the mail form Domain Renewal Group please tear it up. They are just thieves. We have in our society enough money problems at present without people trying to trick money out of us. Please join me in an informal "Grass roots" movement to get rid of such creeps...

I called their number to complain about the practice and the representative said "do you know what advertisement is...?". I hung up pretty soon after that so I didn't really get his definition; but apparantly for Domain Renewal Group the definition includes the attempt to get money for nothing. Where I come from we call that stealing! This business should be woke up by the fact of not getting any customers at all!

Unethical Trade Practices

AUTHOR: Nicholas - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, February 25, 2009

I'm a bit confused on the whole "money for nothing" bit. You never explained how people are giving them money for nothing. What they are doing is, in my opinion, very unethical.

Here's how it works. Fly-by-night companies like them get your information usually by a WHOIS queiry. Either they personally do it or pay some unethical information merchant to obtain the information for them. Technically, it is a violation of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Number) policy to utilize the WHOIS database for "commercial solicitations."

They are NOT an ICANN accredited registrar. I just received in the mail today the same thing you are speaking of. I checked ICANN's list of accredited registrars and theya re not on it. Below is the URL to ICANN's official list:

(((Link Redacted)))

If you see a company selling domains and they are not on that list then they are what is called a reseller. For example, may people use Wild West Domains (part of GoDaddy) or they have a reseller account with Enom.

In this particular case, the company Domain Renewal Group is hosted and a reseller of (((Link REdacted))). I have contacted ICANN today in regards to the matter in order to file an official complaint. I will be filing a complaint with the FTC as well.

They must make a pretty penny because snail mail marketing is very expensive and not what I would consider a very cost-effective marketing strategy. The company has not been in business very long. According to the WHOIS database their domain, domainrenewalgroup.com, was just registered on 5-13-2008. The domain is good until 10-9-2013.
