The Arizona Board of Medicine illustrated 4 cases in which Dr. Steve Fanto’s prescription of pain medications was questioned. The cases included one in which a 41-year-old woman died of "poly-drug toxicity" from medications, and another in which a non-cancer patient was prescribed the highest available dosage of Subsys Fentanyl liquid. Subsys is made by Insys pharmaceuticals in Chandler Arizona. Subsys is a liquid fentanyl spray that is about 50 times more powerful than heroin, and Steve Fanto knew how powerful this drug was as part of his medical training, but prescribed it anyway. He shockingly put his poor sick clients lives at risk for the money. Two other physicians in Arizona also received speaking fees from Insys, but prescribed the drug in a careful manner and those physicians did not have their medical licenses revoked.

Among the board’s findings was that Dr. Steve Fanto MD was starting patients off with 800 micrograms of Subsys, the highest available dose, despite FDA-required labeling that said they should be started at 100 micrograms. Subsys is only approved for patients with uncontrollable, severe cancer pain, but that didn’t stop Dr. Steve Fanto from prescribing it to many patients who didn’t have cancer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved of the use of Subsys ONLY FOR cancer patients with breakthrough pain not controlled by conventional pain medicines.
