Eagle Shield Inc is Ripoff Report Verified
Ripoff Report Verified™ .. part of Ripoff Report Corporate Advocacy Business Remediation & Customer Satisfaction Program.A program that benefits the consumer, assures them of complete satisfaction and confidence when doing business with a member business..

The information provided in this report below is based on comments made by Garrett Harwood during an onsite inspection held by a third party verification company with no biases toward Eagle Shield Inc.

Eagle Shield Inc is an energy saving solution company that services both homes and businesses. Garrett Harwood stated the following in regards to his company, "we find the best energy saving technology that help people be more comfortable in their home business, and save them money off their utility bills." Eagle Shield does this by providing and using products that have the highest quality and warranty, which are verified through a third party verification company.

Leads for Eagle Shield Inc are primarily generated through television and radio advertising, "as a company we've spent over 7 million dollars in television advertising and radio advertising." They also advertise through door hangers, telemarketing, and home and garden shows. Once a potential client has expressed interest in their services, Eagle Shield Inc will come to their home with their state of the art thermal imaging camera and perform an 18 point audit, "when we are done we give them a print out, and make suggestions of what will make them more comfortable and save money. Then they can pick and choose what solutions fit their budget."

During the onsite interview, Mr. Harwood was asked to describe some of the common complaints that Eagle Shield Inc receives. While Eagle Shield Inc rarely receives complaints, when they do they typically arises when energy companies raise their rates, or when a customer only does one of the energy saving recommendations that Eagle Shield makes. When a situation like this arises Mr. Harwood always relies on the data, "we go back to the audit, we look at it and we say we recommended this...and you didn’t do it, but your saying your bills haven’t decreased. He [the customer] said yes my bill is exactly the same, I said four years later your bill is exactly the same. Well that proves you saved because I can prove to you PGNE had a 31% rate increase over the past four years, and if your bills are the same you saved a minimum of 31%."

When asked to comment on complaints posted on Ripoff Report's website Mr. Harwood stated that of 11 complaints posted on the website 4 of them are from competitors, and the additional complaints were along the lines of the previously mentioned complaints. In order to assure future and current customers Mr. Harwood said, "we're the only insulation company in the world endorsed by NASA. We're on NASA's website, we're the featured article in the 2004 NASA spinoff magazine. When you have a multibillion dollar government agency endorsing you, and they care enough to put you on their website hopefully you would believe that we're not a little fly by night company." In addition to this highly esteemed accreditation Eagle Shield Inc has a A+ rating with the BBB, all employee's attend a training program and must pass a test with 95% or higher in order to be hired, "I feel that we have the best ratings that we can for our employees."

Eagle Shield Inc is proud to be a part of Ripoff Reports Corporate Advocacy Business Remediation and Customer Satisfaction Program. Mr. Harwood further stated, "I see Ripoff actually does care. I see that they do go the extra mile...and for the first time in all these years I feel like logic has prevailed. They looked at our ratings, they looked at our satisfaction, they looked at our A+ rating. They looked at everything, and for the first time I saw Ripoff go to the customer and say why are you requesting this when the request is unreasonable."

Eagle Shield, Inc. AKA Garrettt Harwood Scammers - Radiant Barrier Doesn't Work as Described - No No Money Back Guarantee as Promised Before Purchase - Installation Doesn't Meet Standards Ripoff Dublin California

The product, radiant barrier, made the inside of my home hotter than before it was installed. The installer did a lousy job that is not acceptable by any standards and he deliberately shorted me on material.

He removed existing insulation from heating/air ducts and tore insulation off of a skylight leaving exposed sheet rock. A radiant barrier should cover the entire attic floor which means that it must be taped or overlapped to hide exposed insulation and wood.

The installer cut it into short pieces that are loosely laid on top of the insulation with every single edge exposed. None of the seams were taped and there is no overlapping. All edges are exposed which does not conform to the industry standard. How can it reflect the heat and keep it out of the insulation when the insulation is not entirely covered?

Less material was used than was indicated on the work order and I believe the installer deliberately shorted me in order to commit theft. The required amount of material was obviously not used, as demonstrated by the failure to overlap the edges and hide the exposed beams and batting.

I found this company on the Service Magic web site and they tried to contact this company, but to no avail. By the way, Service Magic doesn't publish all of the customer reviews - only those that were resolved. This may lead to a false sense of security when choosing a contractor. They refuse to post my review because it has not been resolved.

AUTHOR: Coriolis - (United States of America)

Eagleshield sells three products: insulation, solar attic fan and a window film.

They sell the solar attic fan for about $3000 which includes installation and that is very overpriced. The fan is the best you can get, but you can get it directly from the manufacturer in San Diego for hundreds. You can find a local handyman that can install it for a few hundred more. Do not buy this product from ES.

They also sell a window film that prevents heat transfer and UV penetration. Again, way overpriced. You can get the same or equivalent from companies like Genesis Window Tinting for (price varies based on what you want) about $6/sq ft. This is a price way cheaper than ES is offering.

Now, to the insulation product. I was considering ES to lay down in my attic. I am also considering a significant redo of the HVAC installed in my home. After speaking to a number of companies, who warned me against ES, the solution I came to was to bury my ducting work in R-19 insulation. The the blanket approach advocated by ES will reflect heat back into the attic and cause the ducting work to heat up. The large volume, blown cellulose R-19 insulation will allow me to protect the ducting from the attic heat. This is a very common solution used in very new homes today.

So there is also the possibility of putting ES against the A-frame and not flat on the attic roof (horizontal). Once again, there is a much better solution. You can get a product called (((competitor's name redacted))) from (((link redacted))) at a cost of $337/5 gallons that covers $2000 sq. ft.

Bottom line. These guys are a joke and you can get the same results elsewhere for much less. RIPOFF.

You can buy the material virtually anywhere

AUTHOR: Mre2000 - (U.S.A.)

Comments that the company does not sell the material may be true, however you can buy it at Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware... pick one (look for a product called Reflectix). I am just now installing in my attic, but do not expect that it will keep my house at 70 degrees during the hot summer. But you WILL see cooler temps in your home, its impossible not to. I have used this material for a number of applications and it does exactly as advertised. Combined with other solutions, you will see even more significant improvement. My 50+ year old home used to hit the mid 80's in the summer. My AC only brought it down to 78 or so, best case. New windows brought it down a few degrees, a small Airscape whole-house fan brought it down another few degrees, and at this point I don't need my AC until late in the afternoon during the summer months. Installing reflective insulation will only help the whole house fan work more efficiently and keep my attic insulation cooler. You can't expect a miracle, thats not what it does. It will however provide a noticeable improvement in inside temps and reduce the load on your AC. If you don't have AC, throw in the reflective insulation and a whole house fan and enjoy the 5-10 degree difference during those hot summer months. Keep your expectations reasonable and you will appreciate the difference.

So Few Complaints / Extensive Government Research

AUTHOR: Marvin - (U.S.A.)

First, if Eagle Shield was "ripping off" people, there would simply be a flood of complaints. In any home improvement, there will always be a few people that it is impossible to make happy. Eagle Shiled has installed literally MILLIONS of square feet of High Performance Radiant Barrier in thousands of homes. For every one complaint made, there are hundreds of happy customer testimonials. If Eagle Shield did not work as described, how would they be an Energy Star Partner, Space Foundation (NASA) partner, U.S. Green Building Council partner, and even have the prestigious Space Technology Hall of Fame with a display at kennedy Space Center? Why would the State of California put in place Title 24 which requires this type of of insulation technology in all new construction?

Please folks, although Eagle Shield works wonderfully as an energy saving and comfort product, many homeowners have done little else to improve their energy efficiency such has tuning or updating their HVAC, windows, weatherization, lighting or anything else. Please get educated. Eagle Shield offers homeowners a 15 point energy efficiency inspection and provides many recommendations for improvements. The most obvious to start with are insulation, sealing and weatherization. They still provide a three year money back guarantee. Before posting the negative comments, please get the facts.

purchase policies

AUTHOR: Konstantin - (U.S.A.)

I concur with Thomas. I called Eagle Shield to purchase their product and was told that they only do installations, and never sell product.

As to the earlier comment about industry standards. You are not in the home so you can't make that assumption (not to say that you are necessarily wrong but you have no real way to quantify that, but as you say, the lady should compare one to one). further, I doubt that eagle shield has the market share to cover "millions" of homes

Eagle Shield should own up and offer to fix the lady's home and do the job properly this time,

Rick ... Please do not post if you are not truthful.

AUTHOR: Thomas - (U.S.A.)

I been researching into Eagle Shield Radiant Barrier as an option for upgrading my house, but after discovering and reading Rick's (from San Bernardino, Colorado) comment, I now have doubt about his review. I just want to make sure the readers of this site is not mislead by Rick's Consumer Comment. As for me, I am still doing my home about the product.

Here is my problem with Rick's comments:

1) After talking to the staff at Eagle Shield on the phone (1-800-88 EAGLE) earlier, I was told they don't sell the Eagle Shield Radiant Barrier material. You can only get the material, if they do the installation, so you can't get the material to install it yourself. I assume only EMPLOYEEs or partners would have access to the material for personal uses.

2) Also, there is not town/city call San Bernardino in Colorado. I check with my Colorado friends and I also Google it... It doesn't exist. But, Rick's state location is very similar to the "Contractor Guy" user id location of Colorado Springs, Colorado...hmmm.

Installation Standards

AUTHOR: Contractor Guy - (U.S.A.)

I understand how a homeowner might have a valid complaint on the workmanship of installers. However, my association with Eagle Shield has shown that ES makes every attempt to correct any installation "defect". But, this complaint is incorrect in the assumption that all the seams of radiant barrier need to be taped. According to the Reflective Insulation Manufacturers Assoc., radiant barrier applioed over the existing insulation on the floor of the attic with overlaps is an acceptable industry standard. I would agree that if the installer did not have enough product to complete the job professionally, than ES should replace the product. The claim that the home is "hotter than before" is simply invalid. Their is overwhelming tests over 20 years proving the amazing heat reducing benefits of radiant barrier in hot climates (Bakersfield). If she had the insulation installed in May and waited until July to say its hotter, yes July is hotter than May. But compare it to theprevious July's and the next two July's. NASA, the U.S. Dept. of Energy, California Title 24, the U.S. Dept. of Defense, Florida Solar Energy Center, etc. along with millions of happy homeowners can't all be wrong.
