It's New Years Day and I lost some sleep last night over a letter I received yesterday from Energy Plus, my Electric Generation provider portion of my Connecticut Light & Power electric supplier.  Energy Plus was recommended to my by my connecticut Association of Realtors in 2010.  They offered lower rates than did CL&P at that time, so I switched the generation part of my bill to them on 9/10/2010.

Yesterday's letter, required by the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority, disclosed some disheartening news to me:

1.  Their rates are variable monthly (I was not told that before);

2.  Today, their generation price is $0.144/kWh ($74.02 on my bill);

3.  CL&P's generation price has been $0.099/kWh ($51.35 if I still had them).

4.  When I started with them, my price was less than $0.08/kWh.

So, for time unknown now, I have been over-charged 45% for the generation portion of my bill.  Annualized, that could amount to around $272 for the year 2014 . . . hurtful for a guy who is now retired.  Admittedly, it is my responsibility to audit my expenses monthly, and I failed to do that in this case.  Maybe this info can help you decide not to do business with Energy Plus.

Today, January 1, 2015, CL&P raises their electric rates 22%, with State approval.

Energy Plus Agrees to Make Good!

AUTHOR: Striker0800 - ()

POSTED: Tuesday, January 06, 2015

Energy Plus called me today, 01/06/2015, and manager, Karen ID #7991 agreed to send me a check as a courtesy refund for some of the amounts I was billed.  Karen did tell me that, unknown to me, my account has been a monthly adjustable rate account right from the beginning in Sept. 2010.  She also agreed to contact Connecticut Light & Power for me to request a switch back to them ASAP, and added that she would send a second check to me for any overages I would incur until CL&P is able to make the change.  Karen could not have been nicer, and I was very pleased with her willingness to resolve this matter.  Karen's direct number, if it can help you, is 267-298-2785.

Then, I called Ms. Green at CL&P to make the same change-over request, just in case, and she was also terrific.  Her number is 800-286-2000.  Hopefully, this update will help someone else get a resolution.

Best of luck (although luck really has little to do with it).
