I first noticed charges on my phone bill in Feburary 2007 from ESBI. The charge was $14.95. I had no clue what this company was or what I was being charged for. I called them and they told me it was for "coupons I had ordered online".

I DO NOT order things online and told them this. They assured me the charge would be removed from my phone bill. It is now May and the charges are still on my bill. I have called them every month and gotten the same run around. They even sent me a check for $14.95 saying I had paid for previous months for their service which I was unaware of. Then when I cashed the check they returned it to my bank and this amount was withdrawn from my checking acct.

I am getting nowhere with these people in trying to resolve this. I am very frustrated at this point. How many people have they charged this amount and gotten away with it ? Also why would they send me a check and then refuse to honor it. Isnt that illegal ?????

I will be contacting the state attorney general on this matter. Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

One thing that people get stuck with is the sites which we visit everyday... When you fill out forms on certain websites, there are clauses which exist in terms and conditions which give them the right to charge for this..

I had the same thing happen to my moms phone line a few months ago.. My sister was on a site and signed up for a news letter..Next thing you know we are getting charged $14.95 a month. I made sure though to call and threaten to get the State Attorney General's office for deceptive and misleading trade practices..

At this point though, you will need to keep trying to contact them... However, you have the right to dispute those charges and inform the local phone company that you refuse to pay those... They can provide more information to you.. Just because they bill you for the charges, does not mean they are off scotfree..

Do you use a VOIP?

(Voice over internet protocol)? Curious because you said charges appeared on your phone bill from a purchase supposedly made via internet.

Moving on, they could have put a stop check order on the check they sent you, but I would presume it would be more costly than the amount the check was issued for (I don't work for a bank, just going off of a stop check I issued about 100 years ago).

I'd suggest from this point on that they credit your phone(?) account. The check was tried, that didn't work. They won't send cash, nor will they send a money order (most likely anyway). If they got into your account, or were able to access it via your phone company, in order to charge you, then they certainly can issue a credit.

I know you mentioned that you do not order items online, but I want to emphasize this - be wary of 'free' offers & the like that can rope you into 1-time charges (or worse, subscriptions). It may have been some innocent internet perusing that got the charge there, so always read the fine print.

Cheers,
