I was approached by the President of the company, Susan Lunetta, at the mall and she told me my son had a great "look" she passed along her card and after thinking about it for a while I said "well, he can make some money for college" so it began.

We met with Sonita in the Boston office and she looked at Joe and kept one of the pictures I brought in to send and see if he was accepted.

I got a callback a week or so later saying he was accepted. Next meeting was again with Sonita and it was to go over the photographs we would need for his "portfolio" as they called it. Having never done this before that was all I knew. They said they had a guy that would do 2 looks and a head shot for $500 and if I looked anywhere else I wouldn't get such a great price, wouldn't get to own the CD etc....( I found out later that at reputable agencies they don't charge as much and give you two Cd's, and they use a FASHION Photographer) Exxcel used a portrait photographer. The shots are terrible. I asked if they printed them as well and they said yes. I thought this was covered in the $500 that I spent so that we could wait around all day with a 7 year old to take pictures (6 hours, there were a million people there).

They never listed out the pricing, it was all verbal. Then they had us go to a meeting for 5 hours. for almost 2 of those hours Susan, the president talked about what these CHILDREN and very thin models shouldn't eat. She named just about everything there was to eat. I felt like I was at a cult meeting. Way to make thin girls get sick Susan. Then she told us that if we didn't have the right kind of prints (the ones that only they did) that any casting person would just throw them away. She also held up a cheap plastic binder that she said was $100 and that if we did not use this binder then we would look foolish to the clients. (more money).

A few weeks later I got an email from Susan with Joeys comp card pictures. She wanted to know if I approved. I said yes and then someone named Sharon called and after thinking I lived in Buffalo for 20 minutes and trying to pressure me to pay for Joe to go to all sorts of Buffalo groups this woman realized I was in Boston. VERY UNORGANIZED PLACE. So then she went over the cost of the prints and other things if I wanted my son to model, none of which was discussed until now, 3 months after starting this debacle. I told her I didnt have that kind of money.

It came to another $500 for comp cards, head shots, template fees, casting network, website fees and taxes, and dont forget the $100 binder and then they want to print larger pics and God only knows what they charge for those. Of these never before discussed fee's almost $300 is a yearly fee. I was beside myself. I wanted to know why this wasn't disclosed beforehand.

They claimed it was, but all I have is info, no pricing. I never got pricing because they don't give it out, its all verbal. They are liars and they sell, its a photomill. That's how they get you. Then you feel stuck.

I asked a friend who worked in the business for years and she called her old Agency for me (one of the top 2 in Boston). They told her, w/out knowing me or my son, that they never see Exxcel on any casting sheets, etc.

I finally went to another agency and they said the pictures were taken by a portrait photographer and the way they can tell is b/c there isn't a box in the eye. I am disgusted with this place and people deserve to know.

Completely disagree. Exxcel is totally unprofessional

I do not understand how these people could reply to your post with positive things to say about Exxcel Model & Talent. I unfortunately was "signed" with them when I was 13 years old. It was a huge mistake as my mother paid a crazy amount in fees and prints and in return I did not book ONE job. Someone could reply to this that anything that I simply did not have the look that anyone wanted. It's funny though because I was signed with the one in Buffalo but ended up going to Toronto and getting signed by a much bigger legitimate agency that never asked me for a dime. They paid for my comp cards, told me what photographers would shoot me for free, and sent me on multiple castings. With Exxcel I only went on probably 2 castings and I was with them for 3 years. I am now signed with a top agency in Miami and go on more than 2 castings daily.

The photographer that I shot with through Exxcel and paid a lot of money to shoot with WAS a good photographer. I will give them that however, the photos were NEVER edited or done in a professional manner. They had 20 other girls shooting the same day and it was a conveyer belt. I ended up meeting the photographer years later in another setting and he told me that he would shoot me for free.

You don't need Exxcel. They are a big rip off and accept EVERYONE that goes to them. That is NOT a modeling agency. They ask you if you want to go to big talent scout competitions and all sorts of other events that are a lot of money. Do not waste your time. They do not get ANYONE work. If you want to be with an agency for 10 years and maybe book one job for like $200 then go to Exxcel but otherwise, research better agencies depending on your city.

Never go to an agency that asks you for a DIME. I am experienced in LA, NY, Toronto, and Miami. Take my advice, legitimate agencies do EVERYTHING FOR FREE!! THEY WANT TO HELP YOU. Agencies don't make money off of pictures they make a commission off of what work you book. It's weird that Exxcel is the opposite, charging money for the photos and that type of work but never sending anyone on castings. Put two and two together.

The people who replied nicely about the original post and said positive things were probably posted by someone working for the "agency" as I have not met one person who ever had to say positive things about that "agency".

I Have a Performing Arts Degree

AUTHOR: Amy - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, December 07, 2008

I have a performing arts degree, so when someone who has no prior knowledge of the business complains about the cost of head shots and resumes, I have to laugh. This is a business. You need to put some start up cost into it to get anything in return. You really do need training and promotional materials.

Exxcel's price for a headshot and CD, with rights to reprint and reproduce as much as you want, is LOW. Exxcel charges less than $300 for a choice of 60 headshots. Most LA and NY photographers would charge at least $400, and Exxcel hands out $100 coupons off photoshoots if you attend that meeting.

I'll be honest, the nutrition rant was a bit extreme, but cutting over processed food does cut down on weight, and maybe you had some 16 year old girls in that meeting, but there were probably a lot of 23 year olds who could stand to lose three pounds to be that much more castable.

It's a look business, if your kid has self esteem issues, don't get them into it. Exxcel is a NON EXCLUSIVE contract, so no, you're NEVER trapped. If you can't afford it, just say no.

EVERYTHING IS IN WRITING!

AUTHOR: Justamom - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, November 22, 2008

I would like to comment on the report above. From the moment our family met with Exxcel they have always presented options available but never pressured us to commit, purchase or insist we use a particular photographer. When they suggested using "their" favorite photographers, it was only after they showed us products of those individuals work. It was still our choice.

We also were given written documentation for every photo shoot, workshop, etc that was being offered along with the prices, options, and copies of CD's etc.

As for the clear portfolio. Again, it is an option available. There is nothing in the contract you sign with Exxcel that insists you purchase it. In our case our child went to their first casting call without a comp card, without a portfolio and was still chosen for the assignment. Certainly, it is NOT necessary to purchase a portfolio to get work. However ours is now on order because we LIKED it!

We also attended a meeting when Susan gave a presentation about food and nutrition. However, we also were eating a very NICE Italian dinner with meatballs, bread, pasta, and soda included at the very same time!

Clearly, as in any situation in life, if you are given information you still have the ability to chose what material may or may not work for you, your child, and/or your family.

As for Exxcel not being reputable, the casting call that we attended had some children who did not have representation, some that had different agencies, and some from Exxcel. We did not see all of the candidates that day, however on the day of the shoot, 3 of the 4 children selected WERE from Exxcel.

I would suggest if anyone has an issue, to make an attempt to get it resolved before making the assumption that if you had a bad experience with an agency that it must be that way for all families. Clearly, that is not the case.

exxcel has delivered everything they have promised and more

AUTHOR: Ellen - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, October 05, 2008

I am writing in response to "laurie from quincy"'s article about her complaint about all the hidden costs, etc with regards to getting her son into the model and talent industry. It's immediately obvious she has expected something for nothing. We have deal with Susan Lunetta and exxcel for almost 10 years and she has been honest, upfront and always delivered. A fashion photographer is typically used for high fashion (runway models) and i'm sure her little son did not meet that requirement. My daughter who is 20 now started when she was in 8th grade and gotten parts in major motion pictures. My little 8 yr old son auditioned for disney's new movie with adam sandler that is just coming out called Bedtime stories.

Laurie could'vge used her own photographs, her own binder, her own prints but they absolutely would've been tossed aside, then her money would've surely been wasted.

Very few other companies in this field have an owner as hands on and cares as much as Susan does about her talent. Now my daughter is attending Academy of musical and dramatic arts ...all paid for by the monies she has earned through Exxcel Model and talent.

Maybe little Joey just didn't have what it took, including a mother who chooses to whine and complain rather than take the initiative to simply locate a company more in her budget. Exxcel certainly is not dishonest not do they overcharge-it is evident , not being in the industry, Laurie is unfamiliar with what a portfolio that will be taken serious costs.

Ellen (mother of 2 very successful talents)
