We decided to use the services of Fixed Price Moving Systems to move our belongings from the Upper East Side to Queens. We put down a deposit. We were looking for a mover who would not change their price at the time of delivery. What would be better than a company with a name of 'Fixed Price Moving Systems.

We called Fixed Price Moving Systems the day before to confirm that we were the first pick-up and we were informed that we were. The move was scheduled to take place on Friday the 31 of August. Our apartment in the Upper East Side had been already rented out (of course), and the new tenants were moving in the next day. The move also had be completed within the specified schedule of the new building we were moving to. The new building only allowed use of the elevator between 9 am and 5 pm on weekdays.

The day of the move, the Friday, 9am came and went. At 10am we called Fixed Price's dispatcher. He said we were not on his list. From there on it was all downhill. We talked to him for a few minutes but to no avail. So we called the manager or supervisor 'Or' at Fixed Price. The manager said we were on the schedule. She then contacted the dispatcher to put us back on the list. The dispatcher by then had scheduled all the pick-ups for the day. We went back and forth with him for two hours. In the meantime he once threatened to take us off from the list. We were shocked to say the least.

What are the chances you can schedule a new mover on the last day of the month before a long weekend. As a backup to Fixed Price, we started calling other movers around 12pm. Fortunately we got two movers who could get to us by 3pm. Even though we might have had difficulty unloading at the new building because of the elevator timing, we were willing to use these alternate movers. But around noon the dispatcher at Fixed Price finally scheduled a truck for the pickup.

This truck arrived 1pm. The driver/supervisor was a guy called Rick, supposedly a "Brazilian Jew", who knew everything about Jewish nocturnal habits with two other guys. We could see there was another load already on the truck. Rick said he agreed to move us if he could pick up another load after our pickup! So after loading our stuff he was going further up on Upper East Side to pick another load. He said this third load would be quick since the elevators closed at 4pm. He said we should expect him a bit after 5pm but he would somehow take care of our Rego Park buildings elevator policy (since Rego Park is Jewish area and he was Jewish!!). So Rick and crew loaded the truck with our belongings and left at 2:30pm.

We got to our new place in Rego Park and then started the wait. Mind you this was start of the long weekend. We were planning to unload our belongings on Friday and then leave for Long Island since we had plans for the long weekend. 6pm came and went with no news from Rick. So we called him. He said he was still loading the truck with the belongings of the third tenant. Mind you he told us earlier that this job would finish by 4pm. We again called him at 7pm, and 8pm getting the same reply.

At 8pm, I got really annoyed and asked him to give me an ETA. Again he just went around in circles. I reminded him of the building rules but he continued to say that he could handle the "Jewish" managements elevator rules. Then he started saying that if the management did not allow him to unload and if he had to come back, he would charge us an additional $500!!

At the this point we were almost losing our patience. We asked Rick to just get the truck to Rego Park. We considered options like calling the police to file a stolen goods report but decided to wait it a bit longer. We also met up with the head of the building association and asked him if the elevator rules could be relaxed incase of late Friday night delivery or on the weekend. The building agreed to a Saturday or Sunday delivery but not to an after working hours delivery.

We called Rick again at 9pm but we got the same lame excuse. Since he was holding us at ransom, we asked him if he could do the drop on Saturday morning. He said he could not because Fixed Price Moving had a big party for the employees!! So we settled on Sunday at 9am.

With our plans for the weekend completely destroyed we decided to wait it out in an empty apartment. We used the time to search the net on websites like movingscam.com, yelp.com, citysearch.com, ripoffreport.com for similar complaints against Fixed Priced Moving Systems, and considered filing complaints with the small business administration and the American Moving & Storage Association.

Sunday morning the movers came in around 9:30am. This was another crew. We decided to pay them by check or credit card to halt payment until we decided a revised price with Fixed Price considering the pathetic unreliable service. The new crew refused to remove our belongings, and infact threatened to drive away, if we did not pay in cash. We paid in cash and signed the contract, noted in protest. All our stuff was brought into the apartments, with some visible bumps to armour, completely destroyed TV stand, and a missing lamp.
