A young black boy approached my husband, child, and I in Michaels Craft Store stating he was working on his public speaking fear and would like to know if he could talk to us.  Me being in college myself and knowing that I had to perform some "social experiments" with strangers as well, I was not surprised, so of course we listened.

He proceeded to explain about how he is trying to get support for a trip overseas and he will do this by collecting points.  We were married that was so many points, we had a child more points, he just kept adding and adding how many points we supported him because we were a working family who were a good influence on him.

The catch was the only way to support him was to purchase a magazine, which we chose the cheapest one and the one I would benefit from "Parent and Child"  he pulled out a receipt book and all seemed legit.  Luckily I didn't give him a check, but we did fork over a total of $60 in cash when it was all said and done.

He thanked us a lot, said buy to us as he walked around the store, and was a very very nice boy.  He said once he handed in his paperwork we would get a call to confirm all the information he obtained from us to earn his points.  Since then, I have still been waiting for this call.

I then wrote an email to the address on the receipt, haven't heard anything.  Called the number on the receipt, no answer just a message of "not available."  I tried to find their website online, and found this site where other have reported the same scenario as a scam!

I then selected that I am also a victim and am now filling out my own scam report.  It is just so sad how you can't trust people anymore, not sure if I will ever get my money back, but I'm glad I didn't pay through check or credit card or it would be even more of a mess!!  Maybe they can view Michaels survailance tapes or something and catch one of the many out there doing the devils work!

Be careful and don't be a victim, like I was!

I just commented on a posting from someone else who got scammed over magazine sales... these kids are taught to lie, to say anything, to get a sale! They work on 100% commission and sleep 8-10 in motel rooms, traveling around, looking for more victims.  Checks out the door-to-door catergory here at RoR. The amount of postings from people regarding magazine scams is revolting.
