Yesterday, 9/25/06, my garage door "broke" and I foolishly called the company with the largest ad in the Yellow Pages - Garage Door Services, AKA:
America's Choice
America's Choice Door Company
America's Choice Overhead Door
Garage Door Services
Garage Door Service Company (among others headquarters are out of FL, but they have operations here in CO as well as other states).
Bottom line - they wanted to charge me $450+ for an $85 repair....in fact, had I agreed to the install of new opener as they recommended, I would have paid closer to $550!
Staying the course with the repair route, I "successfully" got them down from about $450 to $320...then, realizing the scam, I cut my losses early, "fired" them and ended up "only" paying them $180 before hiring another company do the rest of the work for $43.12
Yes, Garage Door Services ripped me off, but it could have been much worse....so I wanted to warn the rest of you. NEVER, EVER use Garage Door Services - they are a terrible company - go with Arko Garage Doors (the company I ended up using to finish the job) - they are FANTASTIC and VERY fair on price - the tech. I used was Leo Vargas - the website is arkogaragedoors.com.
Leo had my cable changed out and the system working in less than 10 mins! And for $43.12 had I hired Arko for the full job (cable repair plus upgrading the rollers from metal to polymer) it would have cost me about $85!
I won't bore you with all the details, but basically from the start I had a bad feeling I was been scammed.
The issue with my garage door was that the little loop on the end of the steel cable that attaches to the sliding assembly, broke. Seemed like a really simple fix - just change out the cable, and reattach.
When the tech, Chris, (if that's his real name) supposedly a 6 year veteran with the company arrived (along with his trainee) he explained that the REAL problem was the gear box, etc. and that the entire system needed to be replaced. He then starts to rattle off all kinds of pricing and fees involved...how chain systems are no good and belt driven is the only way to go (also more expensive, go figure)
I then interrupted him and asked to explain to me how he reached that conclusion (replacement) and to SHOW me the defective part. I got my ladder out and started to inspect the motor...Well, then he takes a "closer look" with me and concludes his initial assessment was wrong...yeah, right. Then he mentions that they didn't have the replacement cable in the truck if I wanted to do that, I'd have to wait another day, without a functional garage doorI also started to wonder why there was no company name on his truck?
Right then, I told him to pack up his sh** and leave. I was extremely agitated at that point. Then, he totally changes his approach and says, OK, OK, we'll do whatever you want - what do you want to have happen?
Foolishly, I took this as an opportunity to push him down on pricing - since I own my own business I know it's never a good idea to do business someone you don't trust, regardless of price....but I just wasn't thinking.got them down from $450 to $320 at that point.
Anyway, long story short, they installed 10 rollers and were supposed to come back today to finish the install of the cable.in doing some research yesterday after they left (finding out they're total scammers as I initially suspected and are involved in several lawsuits with customers' they've scammed here in Colorado AND three other local garage door companies I spoke with had nothing but horror stories to share about customers they know who dealt with Garage Door Services and got fleeced) I cancelled the follow up, and hired ArkoNOW, the door is working perfectly.
Today, I enjoyed a shouting match over the phone with Chris that concluded with him waiving the service charge and giving me a 5% discountnot a total victory, as I ended up paying $180 for 10 rollers to be installed.
These guys are BAD NEWS and I after talking with Chris today, I think they actually believe they have a right to rip people off.Chris gave me this sob story about how expensive it is to live in Highlands Ranch and that his house is just as expensive as mine and how is he supposed to pay for it if he charges lower rates..HERE'S HOW: LIVE WITHIN YOUR MEANS AND GET A REAL JOB OR START A REAL BUSINESS THAT ADDS VALUE TO YOUR CUSTOMERS.

#1 REBUTTAL Owner of company
To you, from me.

I have read your report on us. You say that it was an issue of price, than why didnt you tell him to leave right off the bat? This is my business and I can't pay my overhead or my employees unless we charge you, the customer, accordingly. But owning a business your self you should know that. There are plently of garage door businesses out there willing to undercut simply to get a paycheck or get a little gas money for the day, this pleases me. I don't even go out to houses with owners that are looking for that deal or free service. We usually end back up at the house that was cheaply done to fix their problems, either by us or someone else. We are "middle of road" with pricing, but we get the job done promptly and have a lifetime warranty with parts and 30 days on our labor. Our MINIMUM labor is $75 and have a $49 service call that we will typically waive once we install parts.
I currently have over 50 techs and do work in over 20 cities in 6 different states and have been in business for over 20 years. You say it's not good to do business with someone you don't trust, but in my defense, I don't trust any customer. This forces me to charge accordingly so I can survive in this market. If you don't like my way of business then go with someone else..., I guess. It's funny that you want to bash me for doing business, but instead I might start a web site for business owners who want to vent about their customers that want everything for free and get work done by fly-by-night service companies that give us a bad name in general. You should be giving us KUDOS for at least trying to keep business going. Let me ask you something. You say you own a business right? Whats your upsell? You have to have one or you company dies and falls into the statistics catagory. All I can say is wait one year when your garage breaks down from the $43.13 worth of work and try calling them to see if they can come and fix it again. Chances are, either he's going to smarten up and charge you more or hes going to be out of business.
I just found this a little later from your original post so I hope that others who run into your post will read my side of it.
I guess that the meaning of my rebuttal is to check for prices over the phone and listen real hard to any fees that will be applied before they come out. Just as a courtesy can you please not cancel within your 2hour time frame and understand that they helping others with their doors, so if they are late be considerate.
We are a great company that isn't a scam or fraud. We simply do business. One more thing. We will help you if you are having a problem with your door! We cover your warranties the next business day! You have to understand every customer is a priority customer but we aren't sitting on the couch waiting for the phone to ring. I run a business that has strict schedules for installation, service and warranties.
Thank you,
Anthony
