GREED. A word I can only use in the light of all the obvious corruption and fraud going on in America today at every level of business and government it seems. The insurance companies, as a whole, seem to be plagued with so much from corp. CEO's on downward though especially...

Our family's problem being with Geico several years now and having no claims against our policy whatsoever is this. My wife had a series of operations and medical troubels through Christmas and in January, I contacted Geico then to ensure an insurnace payment was received which I thought my wife made before going to hospital. It was not and was a simple oversight on our part and I apologized for that, though I still was within the 30 day overlap period which you pay ahead on your premiums. So I made a payment on phone then and actually paid ahead.

However, after I made the payment, Geico told me there would be a problem. They told me because the payment did not get their when due, regardless I was in the overlap period, they could no longer keep us on their preferred client rate we had been on a long time, and they pushed the renewal date of our current policy backwards 30 days in fact, so it looked as if we had no isurance for 30 days and a lapse in coverage which was not true!

And now, our policy would be reduced from full comprehensive to basic liability (premium still the same) and that we had to have our vehicle taken to some inspection agent in our area for them to review the car that was insured.

Geico also said our policy effectively was canceled and a new policy would have to be issued. But theya ssured us pending this inspection, if all was fine as before, we would get the comp./collision reinstated on our vehicle because that vehicle still is financed and our lender needs to show as 1st lienholder on the policy; yet geico didn't care about that.

So we took our car to a lcoal Geico inspection agent right away and the guy walked around the car and did a visual only, gave us a copy of a form checked off as "no damage to vehicle" and that was that. e said he was tos end results back to geico and we would hear from them... So we waited like Geico said to receive response based on that and to get our comp. policy back.

It has been about 2 weeks now, and in this time, our lender has contacted us saying they show no insurnace on our vehicle and wnated an answer what was going on. Thenw e get notice from DMV whom I called and explained what happened to us. Even the DMV said it made no sense and to get hold fo Geico right away, or we would be repsonsible for paying the state a fee or having our plates taken in 6 days if there was no insurance.

Well, in this period, we also got another policy from Geico, with same policy number as original comp/collision we always had, but now this showed all collision coverage taken off policy with the same premium as the previous full policy we always had.

We called Geico yesterday and they acted liek they didn't care to ehar about the inspection theyr equired us to get, nor cared about our tenure wiht them, or the simple oversight how we missed the payment because of ym wife's medical problmes at the time; and though they took our payment, we were told they refused to contact DMV (as they told su they would after the ispection proved car was not damaged), and say, if we want to get the collision/comp back on and show our lender as 1st lienholder (as they always were before), that we would have to pay ana dditional premium cost now of $500.00 more to get back what we had previously.

Geico refused to care or understand the situation and used no comons ense in our case, and told us that was it or nothing- so if we do not pay $500.00 more ASAP, our lienholder will cancel our auto loan and call that note and take our car and this is NOT right!

We did call several other compnaies right away to do comparison, but since insurance companies use an exclusive computer data system, Geico inputed data on our policy that the other insurers have seen, which they base their premiums by, and to go to AIG for instance would cost us $1,000.00 more for same exact policy!

And our friend who has worked 15 years with Erie Insurance Company and is an underwriter for them, also agrees this is dirty pool, but reiterates this sort of thing has been going on inside the insurance companies to make more money and it is unethical... And even Erie, looking at the insurance industry ratings system used, sees Geico's marks about our policy, so that makes us look as a high risk, and they cannot write us a policy without an exorbitant rate applied...

I feel like this is some legalized scam, because we have always been good customers with Geico, and even had our sons and many others convinced to go to them with their business, but Geico told us none of that mattered. They told us, even though they realize we did not have a lapse in policy, that until their next underwriter review occurs on our policy renewal date (July 2007) they could not adjust or make changes on their computer system to reflect our policy!!

This is a crock and I feel like we have been defrauded by Geico or financially extorted in an elaborate way to now be forced to pay even higher premiums on the very same policy we always held.

I calculated last night, in my lifetime of driving, I never had an accident or at-fault problme ever. I had 2 windshields replaced years ago on my comp. policy broken by rocks from a semi in front of us and that is all. But in all my driving years, I have paid in excess of $56,000.00 in car insurance premiums not including our current homeowners which we have through Geico or life insurance with another company, etc...

Deception is good
So is fraud
Believe in money
Don't believe in God
Manipulate investors
Lie each day
Make your money
The 'American way'
Go to church
Sing a song
Go to work
Do what's wrong
This poem's over
I kept it 'short'
Retain good lawyers

AUTHOR: MountainsNurse - (United States of America)

I had a similar situation with GEICO; however, it has been set to an administrative hearing over the telephone in the state of NC to wage war with a company that operates outside reason, logic, and fair procedures.  A bill was not received by this writer for the alleged lapse in coverage reported by this insurance company to the state, a break in coverage unknown to me via mail, telephone, or email; in other words, there was no notification from the company to me at any time.  During the time in question, it was I who contacted the company relative to our insurance status; it was they who informed us, a ten (10) year patron, we had been effectively cancelled for a short period of time-one week.  Immediately the insurance was reinstated, same policy, same coverage.  There was information passed to this writer the state had been notified, per law.  At no time was I informed of the seriousness of this infraction or the steps in the way this would lead to a revocation of a license plate, fine, or mind boggling waste of my time.  It seemed as if it were impossible to understand since it was an obvious mistake, not on our part.  This company is owned by Warren Buffett, had been in force for a period of ten (10) years, and we were horrified as to the path it had taken.  It had now taken a turn for the worse; notice after notice from the state kept pouring in from the state of NC intimating our license plate would be revoked due to our insurance being non existent; yet, the mistake was corrected; it had not been our fault; and, coverage was reinstated-same policy, same coverage.  How do they deal with those who do NOT have insurance, NO license plates, NO insurance.  Why are WE, who are LAW ABIDING citizens put into the same pool as CRIMINALS?  Those who are say, ILLEGALS, those who have no funding, no means to purchase same, why don't they go after them for goodness sake?  It is horrible to imagine being extorted for something at this stage of lifeWE ALWAYS HAVE HAD INSURANCE.  We are law abiding citizens who cannot understand the rhyme or reason for this lack of taxpayer time/expense.  We have ditched this company and gone to a more highly recognized, customer oriented, user friendly company who notifies the insured if problems exist.

P. S.  We didnt lose the plate but were fined one hunderd dollars for the lapse in coverage-not fair-wish we could appeal-another injustice-insurance company GEICO probably gets a kickback

Geico is a rip off

AUTHOR: Kristy - (U.S.A.)

I read the post of yours and agree what they did is not right they are not a upstanding company and you should go else where for business of good car insurance Geico is a scam artist company that looks out for one thing the bottom line of a dollar they do not care if you have good insurace or not this company is a rip off and should be out of business.

Contact the BBB about this issue as well as your local FTC and your local Attorney Generals office about it file a complaint and wait for a reponse is all i can say if they are calling you a lier on the letter then you know these people that work for Geico are conartists. They have piss poor customer service they over charge drivers and policy holders if you have a bad credit score . IN most state they damage your credit and then revolve it over and over again until they get a payment in some states they try to turn you into the Dmv when you already have another company or getting another company to insure your self and other drivers in your family,

Deductables are higher then damages on your car thanks to Geico they do not care if you ever have decent policy they are not a up scale company My best bet to tell You as a customer drop them like a bad habit and tell your closest friends, family neighbors and others you know not to go with Geico more or less boy cot them period.

If you are a smart consumer file a class action law suit. Geico will not be able to do anything after that . I feel this way this company likes to screw with people then let them deal with it in court they over step their crooket ways to get what is not there your money. This company's a joke

AUTHOR: Lori - (U.S.A.)

I'm a 44 yo driver with a 36 yo spouse. No tickets, no accidents. Although I've heard all the hype about how much you can save with these companies, their premiums are three time higher for us than the ones that we currently pay through a local insurance agency (where we are considered 'preferred' customers!)

From what I can see, these companies prey on those that have trouble getting insurance elsewhere, as I can't figure any other reasons why they would want such an increase from those like myself that can get insurance for 1/3 of their price!

Thanks Mike and Mr. Butts, you are messed up Sir!

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

Thank you Mike for your supportive post. I too knew and dealt to financial planners and there are good ones out there.

Mr. Butts. your post is so out of context all I am going to say is you are WRONG! Tes, indeed I contacted GEICO about this and it was a Saturday and YES I received the information I had and have the policy in front of me now received by mail; so your assumtions, problmes with my true statements, and misrepresented facts just goes to show how many of thsoe in the insurnace industry are SO GREED DRIVEN that they will always blame the customer like you are tryingo do to me.

You do not have the facts clear as I have rightfully stated and this is a shame, and I am sure manyr eading thos out there, know exactly what I am tlakign about.

Also, brokers in insurnace like brokers in lending have all gotten bit by the GREED bug and have done so many unscrupulous things to draw more monies out of unsuspecting consumers that it makes me sick! This is one reason there is so much foreclosures and peopel falling behind on payments, etc. today becaus eof masterful trechniques which have sucked so many peopel in situations they are having hard time meteing regardles show hard they work, and all the while, thsoe brokers walk away saying "I got my commisions, what do I care"...

Another note, we are leaving GEICO too.

A final note, my son was involved in an accident around Christmas when a young driver went across median and hit him and several cars one night, and one person ended up in intensive care from that accident. And my son's car never had its first payment even made and was totalled from that and he and his passenger had some injuries, and to date, after weeks and months of going around and around with the faulted party's insurance company, he still has no check received for the total loss (promised weeks ago from adjuster) they claimed on his vehicle nor do the other parties, and my son's 30 days rental ran out long ago with his insurance, so he had to beg a car from a family so he can get to work and do his job, while the d**n insurance companies drag out and dealy the payments they owe "innocent" people whom their client wrongfully hit and caused damage too.

My son has called and sent documents and filed papers and waited on 2 vacations the adjuster was supposedly on, etc.. just excuses one after the other over the last few months.. My son had GEICO and GEICO even claimed they were going to raise his rates and he had nothing to do with the accident at all! The faulted young girl driver admitted 100% fault to State Police even and was fined.. So he left GEICO and has coverage elsewhere and saves around $500.00/year from what GEICO was charging him annually.

The whole insurance industry needs overhauled and internally investigated to reveal the "legalized" fraud it and its lobbyists in Washington have allowed it to become at the expense of the consumer today.

#7 Consumer Suggestion

One more thing...

AUTHOR: Mike - (U.S.A.)

One more thing, don't let any of the insurance companies tell you they are better than another insurance company in the state of North Carolina, they all do business the same way with the same policy in North Carolina, it's the state law. They all use the same state approved North Carolina policy or they don't do business in the state.

So who cares if they're open 24/7 and I can talk to them whenever I want, does it benefit me to make a payment at 2 in the morning, no, they're an enabler, that's what they call someone who gives a beer to a alcoholic, someone who enables the problem to continue and makes it worse. They want me to make my payment at 2 in the morning when it's late so they can continue to lable me as a bad risk, all the big companies do.

Pay the bill early, get lower rates and let them die from boredom at 2 in the morning because the phone doesn't ring but they have to stay there to pick it up if it does. Maybe they'll lose their job if no one calls late at night. I'm sure not going to call and report an accident at 2 in the morning, I want to be wide awake and alert when I talk to them so I know what's going on.

But the limts that they will pay out in an accident if you are at fault are different, if all you care about is the lowest price then you are getting the lowest protection and may have to pay yourself, I checked and raised my limits. If I ever have an accident and I'm at fault I want them to pay for everything just like I've paid them for all these years, I don't want to save $20 every 6 months for lower rates and then I have to write a check for the other guy's car or hospital bill when I have an accident.

I want to sit back and let them pay for everything, maybe I'll call them up and say "hey, make sure you pay his hospital bill on time, before its due, don't want you to then be considered a high risk insurance company or a bum insurance company". Check your protection limits, the difference in price is real small and they don't always tell you.

#8 Consumer Suggestion

Just a thought...

AUTHOR: Mike - (U.S.A.)

Mr. Butt's comments are very abrupt and no way in the world would I hire him for any job that dealt with the public. I do wish someone would have said to me what he posted about 15 years ago. I've never been in any car accident as a driver or as a passenger in my entire life, never had any tickets in my entire life, I'm not saying I'm a great driver or better than anyone else, I know I'm very lucky. Neither of my parents are bad drivers, I think my dad has had 2 speeding tickets and 1 accident in his life and my mother is over 70 and has never had either in her life. I was on their insurance policy when I was a teenager so it's not like the insurance companies can say I was once on a bad driver's policy so I'm associated with a bad policy. My wife had 1 speeding ticket when she was a teenager and none since, so she's in the same category, we're both in our 40's now so we have our own track record now. Maybe we're all lucky. I had really high insurance until about 5 years ago. My whole life has been like that, I always paid a lot more for the same thing than most people I know. My renters insurance policy was higher, my homeowners insurance was higher, same with the motorcycle and boat insurance. I paid a higher interest rate than most people, even rent for the same apartment was higher than my neighbor.

A few years ago I started to seriously plan for my retirement and got a financial planner and learned a few secrets that would have save me a lot on everything through the years. I now pay everything on time or early and a lot of things I pay completely in full if I can afford it.

I'm not a bum and I'm not saying anyone else is either, but to all the big corporations out there I was, they put me in that category of high risk on everything. I used to pay all my bills at the 1st of the month, every month I got paid on the 1st and I wrote the checks on the same day. Some of the bills were late a week or so, some more and some less, but I always paid all my bills. Nothing ever got turned off as far as water or electricity but I did have my insurance cancel twice in the last 20 years, they were the only ones to cancel me. My financial planner pulled my credit report and the same report the insurance company's use and I saw it, it was terrible. I don't know how much money I would have saved through the years on lower deposits, lower interest rates, lower insurance, lower rent and everything else.

Now I pay attention to the dates. I'm not rich and I'm not a bum, I work a lot of overtime, never miss work and try to be a good person, but on paper I looked like a bum to all the big companies. I started paying the bills as soon as I got them in the mail and once a week I look at my bank account on the computer to make sure the checks clear the bank before the bill is due, used to be I thought it was on time if I dropped it in the mailbox on the day it was due, now I want the check to clear my bank before it's due.

That simple change in my life, although it wasn't simple at the time to get ahead, I had to work even more overtime, got me in a better position with all the big companies. I pay lower rates on everything, the lower the rates, the more money I save, then I can pay the whole 6 months or 1 year in advance, then I don't pay service charges for the installments or the interest they pile up on top of the service charges. It all adds up to a lot of money.

As far as I know, I'm a preferred customer with my insurance company. I know my insurance agent, he doesn't live far from me, if I have a problem I go to his office and he has to look me in the eye and tell me what the problem is and whether he can fix it or not, same guy all the time too, one guy doesn't say he'll fix it then do nothing and when I go back it's another person saying the same thing or that the first person was wrong and that they'll make it right only to do nothing like the first person.

I wouldn't trust an insurance company that had a different person handling my account everytime I called in with a question, no accountability in that system. How long has that person on the other end of the phone been an insurance agent, 6 months, 6 years or 20 years, no one knows, maybe they have no idea what the truth is when they give you an answer.

The best part of all this was the financial planner didn't cost me any money, they're out there for the little guy too, yes he does make money off of me, but only if I make make money on my retirement account, didn't cost e anything up front and his service fees are a lot less than the higher insurance rates and fess I was paying before.

Licensed Agent

AUTHOR: Butt - (U.S.A.)

Steve, Steve Steve,
What did I say that was personally attacking you that you didn't freely admit in your multiple posts on this site? I'd have to be the most ignorant person on the face of the earth to believe your last response which was submitted at 6:55 AM on Saturday morning. Just as you can't figure out whether you're from Hickory or Asheville; you think I would believe GEICO would make an outgoing call to you before 7:00 AM to tell you how right you are and then you'd have enough time to post your response. There's not an insurance company in the country which has an underwriting department on site supporting the service department on a Saturday morning, nor would GEICO or any insurance company make an outgoing call that early except involving an emergency claim situation.

Where in your policy or billing paperwork can you find the phrase 30 day overlap period which you so freely quote? It doesn't exist. But like many high risk policyholders with many different insurance companies, you've discovered the limitations of your insurance company's billing system; often you can pay the bill late and the policy doesn't cancel- sometimes you can even make a payment after the cancellation date and prevent a lapse. But, you, and every other high risk person better be very careful, you're playing around outside the contract and more often than not you'll have a lapse eventually- which happened to you.

Your policy lapsed and you stated you thought you'd just make a payment, no biggie. The policy had already cancelled, the damage was already done. You probably didn't notice the time either 12:01 AM on the date- that's 1 minute into the day for all you high risk scholars out there. So, if they tell you it cancels at 12:01 AM on Monday, you can't pay it on Monday, it has to be made on Sunday.

Congratulations, you're now high risk and the reason you stay with GEICO is because every insurance company knows it. Your policy lapsed in January, that's why your renewal is in July, it's also why GEICO won't make all your problems go away with the NC DMV. You want them to fax an FS-1 to the DMV? It will show the lapse, your problems have just started with the DMV and your leinholder. You may even have forced coverage from your leinholder, have fun paying that if you think rates are high now.

But you are right about one thing, GEICO made a mistake and they will pay for it, but only for a short time. GEICO should have given you a different policy number when they reissued your policy. They moved you down to a ceded policy without reissuing a new policy number. Only preferred policyholders get to keep the same number after a lapse and you, Sir, are certainly not preferred. GEICO or the state will correct it soon enough, and you may in the meantime be able to enjoy preferred rates for a short time, enjoy it if it happens, you'll be high risk again at the next renewal and will stay down there for at least 2 and a half years.

By the way, I checked the NC Department of Insurance website, it posts everything about every agent, adjuster and insurance company licensed to do business in North Carolina. I'm listed there, my company is listed there, GEICO is listed there and so is every investigation, and its results, for all entities in the business. The results of all investigations are posted there before you, the consumer are informed. Guess what? You're not there, you're a liar, and there wasn't even an investigation. But we knew that when you bragged about the early Saturday morning phone didn't we.

Mr. Butt in Virginia Beach is an "Arse"

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

Dear Mr. Butt the former insurance agent, your name is fitting, and you have got to be one of the most ignorant people on the face of the planet judging me like you have without facts or knowing who I am or our situation. I pray you never have anything bad happen to you where all you thought you were in control of in life disappeares before your eyes.

In fact, as of this morning, I will update here regarding GEICO, that they in fact were investigated and now my policy has been adjusted and premiums lowered all of a sudden now that we pressed this issue and stood by the principal of the issue at hand. Our policy in effect, is back where it always was before this whole situation happened.

GEICO also admitted to me today, that their underwriters removed a conviction they had been charging us for that was not correct either (we had no idea about)!

Now Mr. Butt, your assessment is stupid and it is evident you are trying to save face and probably worked with GEICO and made a ton of money off of peoples' policies you sold (and those nice advance comisions). Don't try to tell me about risks and market shares and analysis Sir, because you do not know who I am, but I will be damned I will sit back and let insurance companies bully me or anyone else for that matter, when the facts are what they are and these greedy companies are trying to make more money and blame policyholders and the general public as being a "bad risk". Did you not read my post earlier? I have not had ANY at fault accident or such my whole life!

Your strong arm tactics here is evident and if you were my son, you would never be allowed to have grown up into such a disrespectful human being.

And so you are clear Mr. Butt, the use of a person's credit report for matters of financing by a lender is one thing, and Yes, the insurance companies may "ping" the report ONLY, but utilize an entirely different "reporting database" within the industry altogether which in fact is weighted in favor of the insurance compnany first; Not the consumer. And how that info is inputted (statistically and percentage wise, descriptive wording, etc) by your skillfull data entry agents and udnerwriters, makes all the difference of the company getting more monies "legally" off a consumer though the manner they do it borders on deceptive and immoral...

But hey, you chose to be a business that deals with risks and have gotten to a point, you think there should be no risks which is a mathematical impossibility! The amount of policy premiums you have monthly coming into the insurance industry, coupled with massive international investments and hedging options with those funds, makes so much money in return, the whole industry itself really does not lose out- but is the greatest money making machine for no effort at all by using the consumer.

Like the old saying goes, insurance agents are like car salesmen. They are motivated only by greed of money as you have no skills or abilities to do any type of productive real work for society except to take advantage of those people who do daily and try to make yourself look like some hero while blaming the general public who makes you people rich beyond calculation.

AUTHOR: Butt - (U.S.A.)

Why would GEICO just cancel a longstanding policyholder for no good reason? Why would any insurance company raise the rates of a policyholder and cause them to search for another insurance company? Why? Because you're not a good risk; there's an old saying in the insurance business, ?the right rate for the right risk? and you're not a good customer. Although not all insurance companies are ?for-profit? corporations, none are in the business to lose money. All insurance companies want more policyholders, it helps share the risk, so don't sit back and cry like a martyr, you caused your own problems- live with it or change you habits. Maybe pay your bills on time and learn to be responsible, think about the risk you exposed your friends and family to when you were operating an uninsured vehicle on the road while your policy was cancelled. Who would have pair for their property damage and bodily injuries if you had an accident during that time? You? If you can't afford to pay your bills with your current situation then try paying for both your current bills and the bills you would also have had to pay if that accident had occurred at the same time, I doubt you could do it. It was a stupid decision you made, not only to allow the policy to cancel for non-payment but to continue to drive afterward. How a person does one thing is probably how they do other things in their life; no coincidence you're having problems with your leinholder and the NC DMV, there's probably no shortage of problems in your life. And, that's why your rates are now much higher. Your insurance company has reevaluated you and now thinks your driving habits are similar to the rest of your life- high risk.

GEICO probably thought long and hard before making that decision, NC Department of Insurance is one of the best and toughest in the country, if an insurance company makes a mistake with a NC policyholder they pay dearly to the state for it. Jim Long (your state insurance commissioner) will not stand for a NC citizen to be taken advantage of by any insurance company. You state GEICO entered information into an exclusive computer data system which is unethical and only used to make more money, what do you think that system is? Maybe it's the exact same system the banks use to determine your credit report and for the same reason, but with the same regulations and rules which benefit you. It reports the facts about you; it keeps you from defaulting one company and then representing yourself as a model citizen to the next corporate entity you plan to defraud. Why are you upset, no longer able to go to the next insurance company or financial institution and state that you're a great risk and have them believe it. Are you upset that the truth about you is exposed? Maybe there is false information in your report, could be, mistakes are made, why not order your report, verify the information and then have it corrected. You have that right granted to you by the federal government. Maybe the information is correct and you're upset that the truth about is now known.

Anyone reading this should know that people like you are the reason they pay high insurance rates and interest rates on their insurance and loans. They're paying for your mistakes, or the mistakes you may make with your bad decisions. I don't insure my vehicles with GEICO, in my opinion their underwriting guidelines are not strict enough, I make good decisions and I don't want to be included with people like you. My insurance company is much stricter; but I'm not able to enjoy the freedom of not caring about anything or anyone like you, but I also pay much less for my insurance.
