General Motors is failing the very consumers that bailed their a**es out!!!!!!

In short, I have a 2007 Chevy Avalanche LTZ with 44k miles on it. I have owned it since day one. I have had it for 50 months, so as you can tell by the mileage, it is not used a lot or abused.

My issue with GM, Chevy, Chevrolet, whatever you want to call them, is the rear removable window on my truck. The plastic frame around the glass of the removable window is cracked and separated a good inch. This is CLEARLY a MANUFACTURING DEFECT and has happened to numerous previous owners based on this one (http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/chevrolet-avalanche/TDKJQN2BV5NTMTPNU) website of many websites that people are complaining about the same issue.

Why GM never issued a recall / fix notice is unanswerable by me. Cost is my opinion.

I showed my local dealer the window, and I was told that this used to be an issue on models previous to mine, but it was supposed to be corrected. Obviously it has not.  The dealer and the totally useless GM Customer Service Center (who is supposed to be the problem solvers of GM) both said that they would be willing to SPLIT the $750 + cost to replace the window. Number 1, $750 is a complete rip-off for a piece of glass. Number 2, $375 to split cost is still a rip-off and Number 3, why should the consumer be responsible to pay for GM's OBVIOUS MANUFACTURING DEFECT!!!!!!!  GM said the glass falls under the 36/36,000 bumper to bumper warranty. How is a manufacturing defect falling under a time frame limit?????????  This issue needs to be pressed in GM's face and they need to step up and fix all the consumers who have and had these problems. The only way to get through to them is to push the issue. I will be more than happy to help anyone who is having a similar problem.

No argument that it is a defect.

AUTHOR: Flynrider - (USA)

POSTED: Monday, November 15, 2010

My issue is not that it is not covered under warranty, the issue is that they knew of this problem in models back to 2001 and have yet to find a fix for it"

Oh, well if that's the issue then I agree completely.  That doesn't show great attention to quality control.

I was responding to these comments that you made in your original post :

"why should the consumer be responsible to pay for GM's OBVIOUS MANUFACTURING DEFECT!!!!!!!"

"How is a manufacturing defect falling under a time frame limit????????"

It seemed to me that you had an issue about GM not covering the repair.  I was merely answering those questions.

The link changes nothing...

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

POSTED: Saturday, November 13, 2010

I think you need to read the link again. Every report (the whole massive "59" of them)..is regarding 02, 03 and maybe one or two 04, 05. How many avalanches were sold from 02-07? Once you find that number..divide it into the number of complaints from the "link" you left (and consider not all of them are regarding the back window defect you have) and then we will know how widespread this is.

 from the link...

"I have been in the glass business for over 30 years and I own an 05 Avalanche. The corner split like I have seen on so many. the easy fix, (once the frame has completely separated), is to square up the broken parts so the frame will slide all of the way onto the glass. prime the glass with ureathane primer, put some ureathane in the frame channel, slide the frame on as far as possible, and tape. fill the existing gap with ureathane and smooth with a wet finger. onse the ureathane has hardened it can be trimmed with a razor blade. The best ureathane is made by dow and it has to hold with a strength of 450 ft lbs psi. Other adhesives probably wouldn't be strong enough. All auto glass shops have ureathane as it is the adhesive that holds in the windshield on most cars since the 1980s."

Seems to be a viable solution. Since you may be the ONLY 2007 owner on the planet Earth with this complaint...and since no matter how much you complain it will NEVER be covered under warranty...and since GM is willing to cover half and that is still not good enough for you...why not take the suggestion from the 2005 Avalanche owner who has been in the glass business for over 30 years..and left this solution on the link that you posted here?

Difference between defects and warranty.

AUTHOR: GM Ripoff - (United States of America)

POSTED: Friday, November 12, 2010

Obviously ronnyg and flynrider probably do not own an Avalanche so you can not speak directly to the problem. If you took the time to read the link, this has been an on-going issue with these windows. Most owners do not take the windows out, so many times the issue is noticed only after the warranty has expired.

There is a difference between a manufacturing defect, which has been noted by many owners with the same problem, and according to Thorobred Chevrolet in Chandler, GM knew of this issue and supposedly corrected it prior to 2007. If that was the case, then this wouldn't still be an on-going problem. My issue is not that it is not covered under warranty, the issue is that they knew of this problem in models back to 2001 and have yet to find a fix for it.

Good deal.

AUTHOR: Flynrider - (USA)

POSTED: Friday, November 12, 2010

GM is willing to split the cost?  That's a pretty good deal for a part that is no longer under warranty.  They could just tell you to go pound sand and pay the $750.

If you don't think a new window is worth $750 (or $375 if you take the deal), then don't buy it.

You ask : "why should the consumer be responsible to pay for GM's OBVIOUS MANUFACTURING DEFECT!!!!!!!"

Then you answer your own question with : "GM said the glass falls under the 36/36,000 bumper to bumper warranty."

Your next comment : ". How is a manufacturing defect falling under a time frame limit?????????"  indicates that you are not familiar with the concept of warranties.   Put simply, a warranty covers you against manufacturers defects for a limited time, or number of miles.   You seem to expect that a defect should be covered forever.   That would be commonly known as a "lifetime warranty" and when was the last time you heard of a vehicle with that kind of warranty?  I never have.

To sum up, GM is offering to split the cost, when they are obligated to offer you nothing at all.  Hard to call that a ripoff.

Do you under stand what a warranty is???

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

POSTED: Friday, November 12, 2010

Have you ever actually read a warranty before?

Typically, a warranty SPECIFICALLY states "free from DEFECTS" until the warranty period is up. What this implies, is that any defects are covered..until the warranty period is up. This is why warranties have an expiration. It is to cover their asses in case of a DEFECT.

And it seems to work in your favor if the problem occurs during the warranty period, and in their favor if the problem occurs after the warranty period is up. Unless the product has a lifetime warranty against defects. Did Chevy imply the rear window is covered from defects forever? If not..there was no rip off..you just are on the losing end of a warranty..and ANYONE who owns this vehicle is in the same boat.

If they are willing to split the costs I would jump on it. My Mustang developed a transmission related defect 2 weeks after the warranty period was up and they would do NOTHING for me. But how could I argue with the reason..the warranty was up..such is life. Was I happy? No. But I decided on my own free will to buy a car knowing eventually the warranty would expire, no one forced me to buy it..so like the rest of us I fixed it myself at my expense..but the good news...the new part has a warranty..
