On April 28th GMAC contacted me to ask for the back payments they were due. I had explained that my husband had overnighted them the funds. After being verbally harrassed I was told I had less than 24 hours to come up with the $1200 I owed them. I had only $900. I was told that this was not enough and if I did not pay on thier deadline they would take my car. I was also informed that even if they took my car, if I could just get current that I could get my car back.

On Sunday, while I was visiting my grandfather in the nursing home, my husband called and told me they were coming to get the car that night around 10:30pm. The person he spoke with told him they would take the car and on Monday morning we could go to the impound lot with the money and pick it up. On my way home the car broke down, so in good faith I had it towed home so that GMAC could retrieve it. I did not want them to think I was pulling a fast one on them. When they arrived to pick the car up they then informed us that we had to wire the $1200 to GMAC and THEN pick the car up. I contacted GMAC to find out where to wire the money on Tuesday.

I had to take a loan out against my paycheck for the rest of the money. I had my cash in hand ready to wire it, I had gotten the address to wire it to and was even going to send more than they were asking for, when I was told I had to pay the car off to get it back. This was entirely new to me so I called the collections department and spoke with my collector's supervisor.

After her tongue lashing she explained that my car was so old and had so many miles that they probably did not want it back, but the decision was up to the original collector who was at lunch. I waited and called him back to talk to him. I asked what I had to do to get my car back. His answer was pay it off. I explained everything I had been told by people in his company and his only answer is that I needed to take out a personal loan or borrow the rest of the money. I live paycheck to paycheck and so does the rest of my family and friends.

I have no one to borrow the money from after telling him this, I recieved a letter stating my payoff with extra charges that I was initially told would not be charged to my account. I am only $1000 away from getting my car back, but of course GMAC as a heartless company does not care. They may say I had been late or slow to pay before and I will admit they are right. When you have no income it is hard to pay bills, but they always got thier money. When hard times fall on members of thier family I hope the have someone nicer than themselves to deal with. They seem to have delighted in making things harder on me, I hope no one delights in thier misery.

At the same time I hope people will economically boycott thier company until the learn that hard times fall on the best of us.
