I have been a resident at "Good News Mission" before and had felt mistreated. A religion based homeless shelter should treat people with respect and try to get people back on their feet. They should never talk down to people because they can't work or forget rules. A religious mission should never yell at you or raise their voice for anything ever. I believe everyone there should be treated equal. Employees at the mission will raise their voices if people don't work, tell them they can't sit down during working hours(even if there's is nothing to do at the time), and talk down to you if you don't follow by every rule. During the missions 'church service' you are not allowed to use the bathroom or you will be yelled at or belittled. Even in actual churches you can get up and use the restroom. When incarcerated(jail), nobody is allowed to tell you that you can't use the restroom. The mission treats people like they are worthless and people can't stand up for themselves. I consider most of what they do brainwashing.

At the 'good news' mission they bring the homeless in, feed them, and give them a place to sleep. If you are not employed, they demand you work for them, or you will be kicked out. Work includes all of the following: Crushing recycled cans, cleaning trash in the alley ways and roads(that don't even belong to the mission), crushing cardboard, and construction related work. People that work at the mission work very hard for their stay. People their deserve to be paid for the kind of work they do. I witnessed a man that was working for the mission standing on the side of the building coughing and sick while on "work detail". An employee came up and asked him what he was doing(while the man was coughing very hard), the man replied by saying "waiting for you to give me another task cause the other one is done". The employee replied by screaming at him telling him, "What is the RULE for work detail? The rule is to come straight to me when done and tell me you are done. I will take you inside and have you talk with Mr. John Doe and see if he wants you to have you leave". This is complete mistreatment. The employee just should have asked if he was alright and then asked if he was done with his assignment.

At the Mission they have no phones "clients" can use. You have to use payphones with your own money. They provide no help with anyone that has no money. You are not to have cell phones if you stay at the mission. On the other hand, employees can have cell phones. If you stay at the mission and they see you on your cell phone, they will take it from you and not give it back until you leave. It is mandatory to go to a 'chapel' service every night. If you do not attend 7 days a week, you will be kicked out. My opinion, this is forced religion. Forced religion is what kind of thinking Hitler used. Forced religion can drive people away from God. Having too much of one thing can make you not enjoy it. The chapel service is an hour long every night.

The Trustee office pays the mission for people that are eligable for a trustee position. What they consider a trustee is someone who doesn't have to work throughout the week. The trustee office, in Indianapolis, pays the "clients" rent, which is $80 a week. If you are a trustee, you must leave the building by 8 A.M, and not allowed back on the property until 4 P.M. unless coming back for lunch. I witnessed a that was a trustee coming back from job hunting, he got back 10 minutes early. He said I know I am early bu I really need to use the bathroom can I go inside. An employee raised his voice while saying, "You are not allowed on the property, it's not my fault that you came back early. You need to get off the property and come back at four. Until then, go to the library next door and use the bathroom. This is complete mistreatment, uncalled-for, and unchristian like. No "client" is treated right unless he informs the owner or employees that someone is doing wrong. For example, if someone has a cell phone and someone tell the employees that they do, they get special treatment. That is also considered unchristian like. I consider the Good News Mission a slave camp/work camp. If they are recieving federal/state grants, they should be cut down or off.         "Wherever the spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom".(2 Corinthians 3:17) There is no freedom at the good news mission.

Sir I am a former client of bad news myself. I had sought psychiatric help while there and was constantly yelled at because of my appointments at horizon house and wishard hospital. i know exactly who the yeller was on the work detail. when i left he was  there and i left in 2009(not including date of leaving or my destination due to fear of reprisal).  i also had asthma at the time and was stuck at burn barrel even though that made my asthma worse. the then pew dorm manager helped me get home thankfully. he was not like the people who stayed there even though several treated me well. i also had a girlfriend who also shall remain nameless due to the reasons i stated for myself. She came by one day during what i thought was my lunch break and asked me if  i was ok because the night before i had had problems breathing.  i told her i was okay and picked her up  in a sign of affection. i was then screamed at by the work detail supervisor to put her down. i was informed that night it was either a place to live or my girlfriend. i had no choice but to leave her while i was at the mission. she has informed me that she still goes through the alleyway and sees the men mistreated. recently she asked if she could come stay here( she lives near the mission and is afraid of the neighborhood) and i told her yes and she said that she still gets yelled at by some of the "workers" there who are on the payroll. if bad news was a true ministry they would be accepting of human nature and try to facilitate social outreach among "clients". they also informed me that i was not really supposed to call and check on my grandfather or uncle who have health problems. i had tried to get a job in the area and they sent me to their camp where i busted my butt and had to attend morning bible reading and their approved church when i never was taught to do the morning bible stuff and fact is i am a methodist and wanted to try the local um church for my services at the camp. this request was denied by the camp director and the head of the camp work detal. i was informed that i could not do such things as attend evening services at the local um church when i returned to the mission when the church went to evening services and that i was not allowed to attend the sunday evening meal that the church provided to those that attended services. they also would not allow me to seek the counsel of someone of my faith. the only evening service i was allowed to attend at that church was the Christmas Eve service. thankfully i was able to leave Indiana and my then girlfriend and I have been able to reconcile since i am no longer at bad news.
