Purchased a Comanche Truck GPS  890 HDLM which has lifetime free map updates and speed camera updates however when I went to update the maps the unit would not connect to the computer - called the phone number of the company got a recording to state the problem and they would get back to me the same day - never happened - tried for 3 days to get a response-  finally I emailed customer service and got this response

The good things is that you don't need to purchase anymore maps and extras for CANADA & USA.  You have the latest maps and extras already and they are on the chip located in the gps slot. You can use the maps on a chip minimum for 4-5 years, you don't need to purchase any maps and extras
They are full maps with extras and detailed coverage -  plug and go maps no updates are needed like the downloadable maps with online partial updates. Some customers use them even more than 5 years as the gps last more if you never do partially updates online, To use maps on a chip 5 years is normal and than you just change the chip , never worry for installation and updates,  map on a chip -  plug and go map just insert it in the gps slot and this is it, your gps is ready for use -  the map on a chip is just changing the whole map(never online partial updates that only send your gps for costly repairs if you do something wrong during the instillation and the setup of these updates). Just use the gps for 5 years and than change the chip if needed just contact us here and we will send you a new chip.  Many customers are complaining now from these updates as they cause so often failure in the gps software and subscribe you for costly repairs after the warranty period.  If the internet connection fails or if you don't do right any of the steps from the online instructions after the online download and resetting the gps,

Even if you have 2015 or 2016 or 2017 or 2018 maps there will not be a difference that you will notice in the maps when you drive as the updates are just 0.1% which is nothing, the only difference comes from the satellites signals and the the gps settings and the gps automatic choice to pick an alternative route or the nearest address if some address is missing from the map

Even if a new house or street is built the gps still will find the place by giving you the one next to it as an option, or the intersection or the middle of the street, you will always will find the the final destination with this gps

This is totally unacceptable as I need to be able to update the maps and Points of interest monthly as I travel 2500 to 3500 miles weekly and need updates on new roads, weigh stations, speed cameras, speed traps, bridge heights etc. An upgrade every Five years is a joke

I asked for a RMA number so I could return the unit for another one - no response - as this company is a Garmin Wholesaler and this is a Garmin product I shall contact Garmin also and let them know about the total lack of customer support this company gives their customers. As this is the first Garmin product I have purchased and was considering purchasing Garmin Avonics to upgade my aircraft avonics which I will have to reconsider because of this Poor customer support.

So to close Do not purchase any products from GPS America and be careful about buying Garmin Products

Update of my report on GPS America

This is not a rebuttal from GPS America but an update on my dealings with GPS America.  I filed a report on GPS America on Jan 11 2016. As of this date Jan 12th 2016 I was contacted by GPS America's Customer Service Department in order to resolve the issues I was having with the GPS which I purchased from them. In retrospect I feel that I should have researched the update capabilities of this GPS to determine if it would meet the requirements for an over the road semi-truck.

GPS America customer service department came up with a solution by exhanging the GPS with one that had the update requirements that I needed. Also I was in error as as to thinking that this was a Garmin product - It is not so my appoligies to Garman and I will reasearh the Garmin line of products to see if they will fit my needs.

I thank GPS America for the fast resolution of my problems and would in the Future would purchase more products from them.
